Stranglers

1,897

From June, 1962 through January, 1964, women in the city of Boston lived in fear of the infamous Strangler. Over those 19 months, he committed 13 known murders-crimes that included vicious sexual assaults and bizarre stagings of the victims' bodies. After the largest police investigation in Massachusetts history, handyman Albert DeSalvo confessed and went to prison. Despite DeSalvo's full confession and imprisonment, authorities would never put him on trial for the actual murders. And more than 50 years later, significant doubts continue to surround the case. Was DeSalvo really the killer? Was there more than one Strangler? And did the Boston PD and the FBI do everything necessary to find and stop the murderer? Stranglers, an original 12-part weekly documentary podcast from Stitcher and Northern Light Productions, is a fascinating, contemporary audio investigation of the Boston Strangler story. Using never-before-heard voices, interviews with actual suspects, extensive original research and new conversations with the victims' family members, host Portland Helmich will introduce you to every facet of the case, from the reporters who originally covered it to the police who worked furiously to solve it, as well as terrified witnesses who claim to have met the Strangler himself.

    Horrible
Exactly the kind of garbage that you would expect from the moronic mind of Ben Shapiro. A bunch of lies and half truths just like the daily wire

    Well done presentation!
This show has such a good presentation on the case of the Boston Strangler (or stranglers). The use of interviews with people who lived this case and actors made it hard to stop listening to. I found it hard to hit the pause button. Great listen!

    Excellent
This was an extremely well produced and intriguing podcast. Sensitively told but did not gloss over the acts of this evil man and what these victims suffered. I highly recommend this top notch podcast to anyone who wants to understand the fear that gripped Boston at the time and the lives lost because these women opened the door and evil walked in.

    Top Tier Podcast
This is probably the best true crime podcast out there. Beautifully produced and the interviews are extremely compassionate and not exploitative. I’ve listened to this podcast a couple times through because it’s that good. I will say that if you’re a female living alone, I’d be very wary of listening to this. It’s extremely scary and made me think twice about trusting anyone.

Well produced and researched. It’s such a huge case it would be great to have summations and more timeline recaps. For e.g. it sounds like De Salvo is likely to have committed several of the murders. It would be interesting to know how those murders align time-wise, or not, with the others. More psychology would be interesting. Some serial killers start with lower risk victims and then escalate. That could be an explanation for the change in MO. But again, the timeline got a little muddy in my mind as went went through since there was so much info.

    Great Listen!!!
This podcast is well research, has quality production, flows nicely, and the narrator does a great job talking through the case. I really enjoy this podcast. It keeps things interesting, build suspense and goes at the story of the Boston strangler from SO many points of view - victims families, detectives, friends of victims, women in Boston at the time & even brings in authors who have extensively written about the case!! 5 stars, well done!!!

Superb! Old-school detail. Music, audio, interviews perfect.
You will not regret spending some time to binge this podcast. I listened to the whole series the moment I found it as it’s very addictive. The use of audio contemporary to the murders in 1962 and 1962, music that beautifully evokes the time period (including an intro that is easily my favorite podcast intro ever (you won’t want to skip over it), superb interviews with an array of participants, and the expert use of sound to conjure the Boston of the early 1960s all combine to create an extraordinarily engrossing portrait of a lost time filled with contradictions. This was a time of innocence, exemplified by the young women in large numbers seeking jobs and excitement in the big city; and it was a time of discontent and extreme violence, as exemplified by the assassination of the (Boston Catholic) President Kennedy, which looms in the background of the Strangler’s murders. I was born well after this time period but this podcast makes me feel like I was there and can see the tough detectives working on the murders day and night, often in their own humble homes as roasts cooked in the oven for Sunday dinner and their very Catholic families prepared to attend mass. I can see the working-class Bostonians that populate this world, and most importantly, the women whose rich lives were brutally cut short. The victims, whose life experiences varied from fleeing persecution in Stalin’s Russia to moving away from a very small town in Massachusetts to find independence in the city, are respectfully revived. This is one of the best and most professionally done podcasts of the many true crime podcasts out there. It’s a fantastic deep-dive into one of the most famous “serial killer” cases of the modern era. The infamous “Boston Strangler” case is a case that many have heard of but few know the details, and very few people know that DeSalvo was NOT clearly the perp in all of these murders. That fact makes it all the more terrifying.

    Incredible
Great, thorough reporting. This podcast was excellent from being to end. Great job Portland and team!

    Excellent
This podcast is exceptionally narrated and produced. I like the chronological examination of events and the people interviewed in each episode, to include investigators, family members, authors, and reporters. The city of Boston in the early 60's comes alive in each episode. Working with sex offenders and a few serial rapists/murderers, I especially recognize and commend the emphasis on victims. Each victim becomes a person to the listener - her interests, manner of dress, occupation, and plans for the day that turned out to be her last. Thoughtful and respectful descriptions, including the horrific crime scenes. Very well done.

    Must Listen
I was hooked immediately, having known little about these horrible crimes but also the way in which Portland lets the story unfold. Tastefully done, really brought to light a larger issue and was a great memorial to those 13 women.

    Old case, new angles
I know quite a bit about the Boston Strangler, but this podcast presents a number of new angles. Beautifully constructed and implemented, they are doing a dynamite job. Highly recommend! So much better than another recent podcast exploring another old case that happened in Atlanta..lol.

Did not make me feel macabre
The last episode contextualized violence against women and violence prevention, which made me feel less macabre for listening to true crime podcasts. I didn't mind the re-enactments at all... I barely noticed them.
  • WeinsweigFam
    Great Listen
I caught myself not wanting to wait till the next episode or listening to anything else when I still had episodes to listen too.
  • Qwyupsjd
    So good!
Exceptional podcast, riveting from start to finish. Such high quality and a story that will have you binge listening every free second you have. Could not recommend more!
  • Riss B
    Wayyy over dramatic
Story is interesting enough without the over dramatic re-enactments. And it’s totally unnecessary to always have a type writer sound in the background when people are speaking to indicate that they’re writing. It’s too on the nose and comes across kind of silly. The story is quite interesting but because of some of these stylistic choices it’s hard not to fast forward through a lot....
