The 40 Year Old Boy

581

Hey, what's happenin'? Mike Schmidt here, hoping you'll click that "Subscribe" button and join me every week for "The 40 Year Old Boy", a brutally funny stream-of-consciousness monologue about my life. It's been called, "the funniest answering message you'll ever receive", and I agree ... unless, of course, Paul F. Tompkins has ever called you. That guy is hilarious.

    Useless
Please don’t bother with this show. Mike makes promises every time he does a show and he NEVER follows through. When he is in trouble he will take your money, but it is a one way street. I’ve been listening for over a decade and he can’t even bother to reply to a message. I made a comment about yet another promise he failed to deliver on and he blocked me from the podcast group page on Facebook. Good comments only for the 56 year old boy or you are banned.

    EVH
I’ve listened to this full 3.5 hour episode twice already and, honestly, thinking about listening again. Since EVH passed, I’ve listened to many tributes, and there are some really nice ones out there. However, there is not one that even comes close to the heart and pure love expressed in this episode. Mike, thank you for expressing what so many of us feel, but could never explain like you did. Absolutely awesome.

    40 year old joy
I’ve been listening to the gems mike has been dispersing since he was the third basemen on NNF. When he is telling stories there is no one I’d rather hear.

    Always Entertaining
I listen to a lot of comedy podcasts. The 50YOB has made me laugh out loud the most of any of the other shows. Highly recommended!!!

    Funny, Engaging Entertainment
Hey Mike. 1st listen was your latest episode from the 4th. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Looking forward to listening to the previous shows. 👍

    Great
I have been listening for about a 2 years now and I must say this guy is great! The only guy that can make a Uber trip so compelling ( and yes Mike I love those stories). If your looking for solid entertainment look no further!

    Great guy, tough show
Mike was a cutting-edge comedian looking for a big break. He’s a great guy and cares about his fans. His show meant a lot to me when I really needed something. He has great technical ability. But things fell apart for him, and now he’s a sad Uber driver. Great great talent but a hard show to listen to these days.

Time moves on but Schmidtty stands still instead of Stand Up
Update: Looks like my prediction of his Patreon $ doing absolutely nothing to further his "stand up comedy" "career" has proven true. Lucky fans have helped him buy a new Mac laptop and the iPhoneX and fund his personal trainer. It's also enabled him to hide indoors, quit working, and completely lose all pretense of doing ANYTHING comedy related. Atta Baby! ------- Baby Schmidttly needs to get over himself & stop insulting the very idea of comedy by claiming to be a stand up comedian. He’s not even funny in his own podcast. How can he even call himself a stand up comedian? Is he constantly, or ever, trying to get stage time? Doing open mics? Writing & working on material? Does he even go watch real comedians? It doesn’t sound like it from his podcast. Schmidt used to talk about having crummy jobs that would at least give him the flexibility to DO STAND UP. And yet, he didn’t. And now, he’s not even working. He’s not even funny. But he has a Patreon page! Somehow having fans financially support Schmidt is going to be the magic ticket that gets him up & out? Nope. Fans already bankrolled one tour for him—and then he crawled back into a hole and did nothing. For years. Except ask for more $$ from fans. If Schmidt wants to “get paid to talk” without doing the work of comedy: then stand on a corner with a donation bucket. I can’t imagine why anyone who has to work for their $$ would donate to this show only to listen to how he fritters it away & throw tantrums like an ungrateful toddler. Nothing is good enough for Schmidt, yet he does nothing for himself. Sycophantic fans will do as they do, but it has nothing to do with Schmidt’s merit and everything to do with their own enabling weakness. He’s just an unfunny boring baby with microphone.

I'm in the 99% that loves Mike
Yes there are a few people that don't love Mike. I am not one of those, I'm one of the ones that loves him. This is his life, sometimes it isn't happy but he is almost always funny. Those few times when he isn't is just part of life. Give him a few shows and you'll love him also.

More like 40 year old bore
Listen to why a giant man baby is a failing comedian losing all his friends in LA LA land.

    Stands out in the crowd
I listen to A LOT of podcasts and this is one that I have kept listening to regularly for a decade now. Some fall off the list to get added back later, but Mike has been with me every week for 10 years. He is a master storyteller and as long as you understand humor and jokes, you will love it. He pulls no punches and takes no prisoners and will make you laugh and occasionally cry but it's all fantastic storytelling at the speed of his head.

    You have to listen! NOW!
Thursday never comes soon enough each week. Do yourself a favor and listen to the 40 year old boy. Mike, Mex and Lili will change your life forever!

    Dysfunctional Podcasting at it's best
This is one of the best podcasts I listen to regularly. Not because it's always funny, although it usually is. But because the host is a relentless stream of consciousness spewing out tales of personal frustration, petty crime, self auditing, GenX disillusionment, dysfunctional relationships mixed with pop culture references from TV, film and sports that amalgamate into a meat spin podcast that needs Google search as it’s companion piece. I’m not sure this podcast is good for everyone, in fact it’s not always good for it’s host as his best shows seem to always come at great personal costs. However, Mike Schmidt’s angsty vulgar rants are always unique, clever, and inspired. 40YOB is the podcast equivalent of binge watching plane crash videos but the pilot always climbs out at the end.

    Used to be good
I really loved show for so many years. Unfortunately they started talking politics. And very opinionated politics. I respect their beliefs but don't want to hear about it constantly. It makes you become depressed to listen to. Not what you want out of a comedy podcast. I unsubscribed then went back recently hoping for the genius that was.... it wasn't. Lost me twice. Sorry

    Weak excuses.
Never shy about asking for money but cant take an hour for a new podcast. He's lazy.

    Everybody loves Mike
    Great funny podcast

    It's like The Truman Show...
Except with more dick jokes. And sometimes there's a stripper. And Truman has an anger problem. Seriously though, I've been listening for four years now and every Thursday it's like hanging out with that friend of yours who's funny as hell, but you're very reluctant to go out in public with him.
  • SomethingSomethingBlurg
    The World's Funniest Diary
That's what this show is, at it's core. Sometimes it's about what happened to Mike that day, sometimes it's about recounting a story from weeks or months or even years ago. But it's always hilarious and Mike is incredibly adept at effectively telling a story.

I’ve been listening since year 1...
… and never wrote a review. What a jerk. But, this is my favorite podcast, the podcast I suggest to friends, the podcast that determines if we stay friends or not. Mike is great, Lili is great, David is great. You care, everyone cares. Listen.

    A Novel, Not A Movie
Funny, insightful, and, at times, heartbreaking. The 40 Year-Old Boy is all about catharsis and id. Tension that can explode you into laughter, or leave you feeling drained and full of dread. If you don't mind getting your hands a little emotionally dirty, the 40 Year-Old Boy might just be for you.
  • Not Tom Selleck
It may be long but it sure is rambling
I've tried, Lord knows I've tried to enjoy this podcast. But it just doesn't entertain me in the slightest. So much rambling and laughing at your own jokes. No thank you
  • Melodie
    Mike is compelling
I really like this show but have to agree the producer laughing in the background is distracting and annoying. Sometimes it actually ruins the story Mike is trying to tell because she tends to laugh when something isn't funny. Regardless, thank you for the effort and free podcast. Your journey from married to divorced to in love was an interesting one, good luck to you Mike.

    You'll End Up Like Sadat!
Truly a great exploration of the art form of podcasting. While some lesser beings may find problems, the truth is, 40yob is not only one of the funniest men on the planet, but crafting an in-depth, dramatic, character study of himself. It's definitely more of a book than a movie, as Schmitty says.

    This is it.
The 40 Year Old Boy, Mike Schmidt has won the internet.
  • GodsAreMonsters
    Yurt durt dont!
I think it would be fair to call this the "Seinfeld" of podcasts. That is if Seinfeld had be a angry nhilist meat-head from chicogo who manged to hate himself while also thinking he was a genius. Well I mean other than that. At least the show is about ab-so-lutely noting. It has that going for it.
  • Zygo79
    Awesome!!!!!
Mike is one of the best in the podcast game. I've been a fan for years and have listened to him eagerly every week. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this podcast.
  • Alan Evil
    Excellent Cole Slaw!
Mike is funny. He is also somehow able to be funny for several hours every week. He is one of a handful of podcasts I listen to as soon as I download and have since I first found it. That's saying a lot because I listen to podcasts for around 8 hours a day while I work and am subscribed to several dozen. Not only are his stories funny but there's a marvelous voyeristic feeling to it as you watch his life unfold every week, a few hours at a time. Also, he talks too fast, but that's a plus.

The Big Angry and Great Funny
Jumped in after I heard him on Carolla back in 2011. Love this podcast. It's made me cry, think, reminisce, angry, frustrated, calm, and happy. Most of all it has made me laugh. This podcast got me through 2 years of graveyard hell. I used to hold off on listening for a couple days. Listen for a while and you too will start to root for Mr. Schmidt. We care!
  • hjsdghsghjshjshjshj
travon martin ended it for me
I was subscribed but I got tired of Mike talking about something but saying the same thing over and over again. If it was 1 hour it would be bearable. Say what you want to say then move on Mike don't keep rehashing the same thing over and over again.

Mike Schmidt, one of the sharpest minds in comedy. There's never a dull moment.

    Much Funny Fun!
You get used to the chick laughing in the background.
  • Doxpop
    Wow
Fairly decent content..you are a funny guy. But this podcast is unlistenable because of the cackling producer and her super annoying laugh every 35 seconds. I know it's nice to get the instant feedback of a laugh while you are podcasting..but seriously mute her mic or have her sit in another room, she takes this from a 4 star rating to a one.

    Hilarious
Won season 1 from the Battleship Pretension donation drive. Almost through all of season 1 after just starting to listen last week, and definitely plan on buying the rest of the seasons in order to catch up.

    Brilliant
This is the quickest wittiest man alive!! Love this guy!!! We care everybody cares!!!!
  • Hello bear 66
Love this guy, listen n u will cry, die laughing
I hate typing on a phone but will suffer through autocorrect to let you know " mike is the best story teller alive today" Forget comedy. All the so called comedy podcast are entertaining but not pee yourself funny. Why should a comedian work on bits for days, weeks or years and give it away? Without comedy what is left. Story telling and there are few great story tellers. When I realize there is a new 40 year old boy posted it never fails to bring a smile to my face. Listen and decide for youz selfs. It's the only podcast I look for, really, like a little kid looking for the prize in the ( can't spell ceral) box.

    The FIVE-STAR Boy!!!!
But seriously, folks... I just finished listening to Episode 30 of year five, and the clip Mike played in that one (from a couple years back, I believe) made me angry at myself for only getting onboard with this podcast a couple months ago. What I mean to say is that I was missing out, not that the recent episodes haven't been equally great.

    Beware Donkeys!
Mike is a areat comedic storyteller who can talk the hind legs of a donkey, and always funny.

    Absoutely Awesome
Mike Schmidt is funny as hell and a genius storyteller. Every time I start to take him for granted he pulls out something that really blows me away. A must download and a must buy if you haven't heard the earlier seasons.

    Thank you!
I listened to the episode about The Monday Night Tease, Erotic T*tty show. Someone told me that you had mentioned me. When I saw that this podcast was over 3 hours long I thought, "Dufuq?" But then I listened to the whole thing and became entranced. You have an awesome brain, and I think that's hotttt! Your show is fast, funny and smart. Thank you so much for the kind words, and coming up to me afterward to say hello. You have a new fan. - Heather Henderson

    WOW
Who needs caffeine with Mike Schmidt around! How do you do it, dude? I gotta agree, the laughter in the background is a bit much.
