Raising Good Humans

1,421

As a parent, do you ever wish someone could just whisper some realistic and trustworthy support in your ear? And not make you feel awful for not having all the answers? Well, that’s what I’m here for.

I'm Dr. Aliza Pressman, developmental psychologist, parent educator, asst. clinical professor, and co-founder of both Mount Sinai Parenting Center and SeedlingsGroup. And I'm a mom... trying to raise two good humans myself, so I'm in this with you!

In each episode, we'll go deep (but brief) with both experts and parents to share the most effective approaches and tools and talk about the important bigger picture of raising good humans. My goal is to make your parenting journey less overwhelming and a lot more joyful!

Please join me every Friday for new episodes of Raising Good Humans.

Way too many ads. I appreciate the parenting support.

    Yikes
Started to listen to the Truth about Raising Boys episode and didn’t realize it would be focused on disgust for conservative men rather than how to raise emotionally intelligent boys.

    One of best parenting podcasts
I love her variety of guests and the questions she asks them. I feel she truly understands how hard parenting is. She doesn’t assume everyone has the same resources and circumstances. Can’t wait for new episodes :)

    Teen drinking and parenting
I loved this episode. What is so great about this episode and all of Dr. Aliza’s episodes is she focusing on informing parents and giving them the tools to make or help shape their children. She does not spend time shaming parents or causing more stress. I also highly recommend her book The Five Principals of Parenting.

    Just try your best/hardest
I really hadn’t thought about the unrealistic bar these words were setting. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Digital era podcast episode was so intriguing!
I loved the beyond the screen episode. It was very helpful as my stepchildren enter the preteen years and we are navigating the question on phones. Thank you for recording this episode!

    A MUST LISTEN for parents
The episode w author Jon Haidt should be required listening for all new parents. The phone-based childhood so many of us are giving our children will have lasting detrimental effects. It’s so encouraging to see this important topic being highlighted. Thank you!

    The best parenting podcast
If you are a parent you need Dr. Pressman in your life. From her podcast to her book to her Substack, you need it all!

    Always helpful and encouraging
No matter who Dr. Pressman is interviewing it’s always informative and encouraging. There is no purpose in shaming parents or scaring parents to change their actions. And Dr. pressman is so conscientious of not doing that. I really enjoy all of her interviews regardless of the person or the topic which is not true for most podcasts!!!

    The best parenting podcast
Aliza, thank you for everything you share with us and guide us through this difficult journey called parenting. By the way, thank you for recommending a kids podcast, “Mysteries about true histories”. My kids 6 and 8 love it. They listen to it in the car, while we are on the way to school or back. It solved the problem of them fighting with each other. They now instead, listen to the podcast. The car rides are peaceful.

    Generally very helpful and insightful
Three kids in, I continue to rely on this podcast for research related support or direction. Love the recent content from episodes with Dan Siegel and the Harvard Happiness study. Screen time related content is so incredibly insightful and presented in a way that avoids condemning families for their choices.

    Smartly informative!
This has been a very insightful and informative podcast to listen to! We all desire to be our best self as we are learning how to parent our children. I love that the age of your children doesn’t matter, I have a nine-year-old as well as a 21-year-old so everything applies! Thank you so much.

    Mostly Ads
It would be a good podcast if it wasn’t mostly ads. It’s super annoying to listen to when you’re only getting 50% content and need to ship through the other half. I know people need to make money but it’s sounds greedy.

    Great Reminder
How to Spot Misinformation was a terrific and timely reminder to be a mindful information consumer. I appreciated your guest’s tip to turn off the social media app for a cool-down period and to research assertions off the app before sharing another’s post.

    Love this podcast
Thank you for bringing such important information every time. I found this series with Jessica Yellin especially helpful for myself!
  • MadderRoot
    Thank you!
Thank you Jessica and Dr. Aliza for holding a space for meaningful questions and for sharing truly helpful information on how to seek out, process, and understand the news in such difficult times. You’re truly an inspiring light amidst the chaotic bombardment of the social media algorithms. It’s such a challenge to stay present and informed without falling into despair. I am recognizing the negative impact of propaganda and the importance of staying hopeful and empathetic, as a driving force to taking supportive action.

    Parenting GAME-CHANGER
Now that I’m a mom of an almost 2 year old, I’ve been reading, researching and listening to lots parenting stuff (it’s like a Pandora’s box of information). Since I had a pretty challenging childhood, I know I have a lot to unlearn, and need to relearn new parenting behaviors. This podcast has been a GAME-CHANGER for me. Dr. Pressman and her guests have been such amazing guides on my motherhood journey. While the topics they address are sometimes very complex subjects (hard science) the conversations they have on the podcast are very easy to digest. She’s an amazing host and helps give real-world practical advice to her listeners. I’ve recommended this podcast to so many parents, and make it a point to listen every week. I also follow Dr. Pressman on IG, and once asked her a question and received a response. I’m so thankful she started a podcast and that I found her. I couldn’t recommend this enough to parents, child caregivers or anyone interested in just helping the world raise good humans.

    Jessica Yellin
Thank you so much for having Jessica Yellin on. This episode is needed at this critical and painful moment in our lives. I know you see us and develop the content we truly need.

    Objectivity Matters
Total fan of this podcast, but the choice to have Jessica Yellin on to talk about misinformation is a poor one, as she has spent the last few weeks being anything but objective in her coverage of the conflict in Gaza. Please have someone credible discuss the topic of misinformation and not someone who contributes to the spreading of it.

    Middle School Blues
Was struggling with how to talk to my middle schooler about friendships and cliques but I KNEW Dr. Aliza would have an episode about it. Not only did she have an episode, but she spoke with parenting expert Phyllis Fagell (who is so articulate and logical, with great suggestions) plus there was all this other wonderful info about how to navigate all kinds of middle school issues. Honestly I feel like anything you’re having to address, Dr. Aliza will have an episode about. Thank you so much doc for making us not feel so alone or lost in this parenting thing!

More than good, it’s an awesome podcast!
Dr. Aliza Pressman is a stand out! I so appreciate her relatable approach to parenting and deep dives into topics that I can relate to as a mom of 5. Highly recommend her podcast.

    Self compassion
As a mom of adult children, I suffer enormously over the ways I hurt my children, despite my great determination not to do so. No amount of talk therapy, medication, prayer, or anything else has actually healed my childhood traumas nor my grief and regret about the ways I hurt my own children. All three of my kids struggle in ways I thought I could prevent by loving them, breastfeeding them, raising them with emotional awareness, not hitting them, telling them they were deeply loved and lovable, and so on. They did not grow up in crushing poverty, cruelty, addiction, and violence as I did. Even so, I managed to pass my traumas along to them. The pain I feel about my failures seems unbearable at times. For the first time in my life, at this moment, I feel that there may be a way to heal because I just listened to Dr. Aliza’s episode on self compassion. Powerful, powerful episode. I have forgiven my parents but have never been able to forgive myself. Now, I feel hopeful.

Great info but too many ads
Great info but too many ads. It feels like there’s more ads then airtime. It’s almost a turn off but the info is really good so I persist.

    Love most of the content
I love most of the content but I will say there is definitely misinformation on cannabis. It’s absolutely not accurate in the motivation department and sounds a bit demonizing. I highly (no pun intended) suggest find better research because eating it decreases motivation in avid users is not entirely true.

Learning so much about myself and my child
I love learning from Dr Aliza. It has been amazing to hear more about the science behind developmental psychology from this podcast. Book has been pre-ordered and I look forward to more!

    Child development without the dogma.
If you’re raising a human, I’m fairly certain this will become your go-to podcast. Dr. Aliza blends scholarship and evidence-based developmental science with humanity and humor to offer you real-life parenting tools. Tools that will save you when the wheels start to fall off, as they invariably do.
