I Spy

Spies don’t talk—it’s the cardinal rule of the business. But on Foreign Policy’s podcast I Spy, we get them to open up. We hear from the operations people: the spies who steal secrets, kill adversaries, and turn agents into double agents. Each episode features one spy telling one dramatic story.

    Phenomenal
Please let us know when you will have your next season! Love the details and specifics with the air of mystery and covert ops. Captures the nuances of the trade. I need moooooore!!! Tons of these.

Can you tell this is financed by Qatar?
The negotiators is one of the most preposterous attempt at lobbying I have seen.

    Fact or Fiction?
Given the presence of basic factual errors (Jeh Johnson never served as U.S. Secretary of Defense), I honestly don’t know if this podcast is what it claims to be, a series of interviews with intelligence & law enforcement agents, who don’t know basic facts about the government they claim to have served, or if this podcast is a work of fiction, a lampoon of the intelligence community.

    Great episodes
Really enjoy this show and look forward to season 5! I’ve listened to every episode, but I thought Seasons 3

The best episodes are the discussions of how spying is counterproductive
Most rational policy makers understand that open source information is much more productive than clandestine operations. It is more reliable, safer, and more cost effective.

    Delightful
**UPDATED** My absolute favorite podcast, I wish there were more episodes per season but I look forward to listening each time new ones come out. Wonderful. Amazing. Give me more. What fascinating people and stories, can’t wait for more episodes.

    Very well done
Great content from real spies, sometimes the operations are not so James Bond like. Here you get the grimy, sweaty real stories. Love

    My favorite podcast
The premise of the podcast is that they interview an intelligence or security professional with the focus on one particular mission. So each episode has a great story arc, something that might be absent if they were just chatting with a member of the intelligence community. And the stories are great! I haven’t been disappointed or bored with a single episode. It’s exciting and informative and varied.

    Love this!
Add some excitement to your life. Follow spies that have lived the pressures, experienced the fear, and survived to tell their tales! I anticipate these episodes and they don’t disappoint!

Very interesting & True! Love this
    Amazing stories, impressive people

    Well done!
I don’t know if it’s the interviewers and the editors or the interviewees themselves, but the synergy among them makes for some great first person storytelling. Many of the stories are well known, but the color and emotion added by the up close and personal style of these stories add so much humanity to the world of espionage. Listen!

    It’s a home run
One of the best podcasts I have listened to. The content is incredibly engaging and easy to follow. Highly recommended.

    Riveting and engaging
Beautifully told stories of espionage and deception for love of country. Makes you incredibly grateful for the service of our brave men and women.

    Kudos!
Kudos to whomever thought of this podcast idea and got it off the ground! I love the format and the content, the story telling narrative of historic facts from one person’s perspective. These vignettes make you feel like you’re right there reliving them with each episode’s guest. And Margo is a wonderful host even though you don’t hear her much! So happy to get a fourth season!!

    OMG! Margo is back!
After a long hiatus Margo is back! Really liked season one of this podcast and really really wanted more. I could listen to Margo Martindale all day long. Add to that some very interesting stories of real life spies and spy-craft and you have a winning listen. Thank you!

    Fascinating!
Great stories! Unfortunately, the background music is irritating, as it is so distracting and loud and sometimes makes it difficult to listen to the person actually speaking! Really takes away from the pleasure of listening. It adds nothing, but takes away a lot.
  • Nordiska72
    Always unexpected and fascinating
I am not the type to get into spy or espionage tales, bit I gave this a try and I am hooked. I get the fascination now. Even the tales from analysts are great. Thanks for this podcast and for tracking down such interesting interviewees.

Please change the music used to accompany the stories
I AM OBSESSED with this podcast my ONLY CRITIQUE is that it’s music being used within the storytelling often doesn’t fit the scenes. I’d look to SERIAL as inspiration moving forward. Music that is additive and doesn’t remove you from the storytelling because it feels out of place is ideal.
  • SparksJoy
    Background music misses the mark.
Why ruin a perfectly good podcast with really bad background music? Why insert upbeat banjo music when a serious moment is being shared? Alot of the background music used does not complement the story being told, and plenty of reviews on this podcast mention it in one way or another. I like the content of the podcast, but it’s less enjoyable when Im trying to ignore the annoying background music.

    Fascinating
I’m working my way through the entire back catalogue. Not every subject is a great storyteller yet every episode is riveting so huge kudos to the editor. Definitely one of my favorite podcasts!

    Great first hand accounts
From the people on the front lines
  • Mara_Zee
    Entertaining and fascinating
It’s especially enjoyable to hear these stories from the people who lived thru them. It is impressive how they put themselves on the line, and to hear what was going thru their minds as they worked their tradecraft.
  • mmcreel
    Fascinating!
I look forward to every episode. The stories are fascinating and make me thankful that there are people willing to put themselves in extreme danger to keep us safe.
  • ReedUSA
    Wow!
This is TERRIFIC!!! But on what planet does the advertising algorithm pair this offering with Saks Fifth Avenue virtual shopping? I married the USMC Colonel’s daughter and she uniquely blends fashion sense with “Quit whining... your limb is still attached by tendons” hard core-ness, so I know there is one such warrior women out there, and the two stories about the female CIA analysts who went respectively to Libya and Iraq war zones shows there are two more, but are there more than that?!? As Patton, said if we don’t man up a stronger race will take our women and eliminate us? Who needs us guys, though, with warrior women like these? These ladies prove my saying that “Girls are the new boys”? Many more episodes, please!
  • Venice Surfer...
Enjoyable but abrupt and with an odd soundtrack
Mostly well done. The main opportunity for improvement is around the editing of the stories - sometimes they end abruptly, as if trying to fit a certain time window, when a minute or two more of explanation- even by the host, would greatly help tie things off or complete the story. Also, the music is sometimes incongruous to the story - for instance a heavy topic where someone has died might have strangely upbeat banjo music playing. Worth a listen though, despite the oddities.

    Great Stories, AWFUL Music
Common complaint about podcasts. The background music is totally unnecessary, distracts from the narrative and adds nothing valuable or relevant to the stories. Not only is it unnecessary, it’s badly produced and mediocre quality.
  • William3000
    Who wouldn’t love this?
Very engaging and well produced. Exceptional. Love Margot!!

    Exceptional!

    SO good!
I’ll make this short and sweet - most of these stories are so interesting. You need to give this podcast a go!

Thrilling stories that will keep you eager for the next podcast release. Incredible insights into the secret work so many do on our behalf so we can enjoy security.

    Absolutely Stunning
I Spy combines thrilling and detailed stories blended with masterful storytelling by the people that actually lived them. A suspenseful podcast that lets you pear behind the curtain of the worlds most secretive profession. Definitely worth a re-listen.

    Awesome - Just the Subjects
Awesome podcast that just lets the subjects speak. No annoying narrator interrupting all the time.
