    Excellent podcast
This podcast was shared with me by a great musician I worked for for 16 years. Steve gets into the real stuff musicians experience on deep levels. Not just tech talk, but life in general. It is nice to hear a podcast from a working musicians standpoint. It goes deep into the life aspects of a musician. If you are a musician, this show is a must. If you love music and musicians, this is for you. Share this podcast, it is one of the best out there.

    Intro too long
Good podcast but the host talks about the guest for 10 minutes before the podcast starts. You almost don’t need to listen to the guest.

The Americana Music Podcast For The Ages (And Musicians)
Long time listener! Steve has been doing the Lord’s work with this podcast. I currently hit pause on the Rob Ikes episode to write this! Steve always has thoughtful questions and uses his experiences as an ace musician himself to pull never before heard lines of questions from these artists, producers and engineers; many of whom don’t have many interviews. The more you get into it the more you realize everyone has a unique journey and they are always inspiring to hear. Keep up the great work Steve! P.S. His Canadian turn of phrases seal the deal on this. #bestpodcastever

    Duke Levine
What a truly great interview with one of the finest yet most humble players anywhere. I love Duke’s sideman work and have been a devotee for years. I am so fortunate that I live in the Boston area and get to see his solo gigs with various combinations of excellent players, as well as with Peter Wolf and others. I don’t know anyone else that plays like Duke or inspires me to explore certain areas of music like he does. So glad I found your podcast- looking forward to exploring it and your music as well. I’ve already seen at least five or six people on your interview list that I cannot wait to check out- JJ Grey? Yeah man! Thank you so much!

    Rob Ickes
Loved this episode- they talk about Rob’s long career, as he shares stories with some of the great artists sessions he was on. Also talked a bit about his gear, and instruments- just enough to get a sense of how he produces his sound. Well done!

    Great interviews
Always excellent, whether the guest is a star or a sideman. You can tell that the guests are getting to places they don’t usually get to in interviews.

    Fantastic podcast!
Amazing show! Terrific insight from Steve Dawson – himself, a tremendous musician, producer, and recording engineer.

    What a great show!
What a great show, I look forward to each new episode, and find myself returning to previously played episodes for a 2nd listen. I can’t tell you how much new music I’ve bought as a direct result of hearing artists on this show. The season 5 addition of Spotify playlists supporting each show are on heavy rotation as soon as I finish the episode. Thanks!

    Great podcast
Thank you Steve. It’s so nice to have a host who asks questions and doesn’t feel the need to throw their own experiences into the interview. Great job.

    Highly recommend
I found this podcast digging around for Debashish interviews and stayed for about a dozen others. Steve has a great interview style and knowledge of the industry that allows the guests to tell some great stories. It’s also great when they talk about their musical influences and the listener can get hip to those artists. Steve, some suggestions for future guests: Bill Payne - Little Feat Gordon Lightfoot - fellow Canadian! Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings Terry Reid Mavis Staples Stephen Stills John Scofield Buddy Guy Leslie Feist Keep up the great work!

    I'm hooked
I've gotten in the habit of taking long walks while listening to these. Steve seems to know an awful lot of interesting musicians, and they seem to be really happy to talk to him at great length. It feels like sitting in a bar evesdropping as he and his interviewee have a relaxed but always interesting conversation, and I feel privileged to be able to listen.

    Insight and inspiration
Steve’s conversations with artists have a great balance of leading and listening. This is geared towards musicians and people involved in making records. Takes it deep into the engine room of recording and performing sonically rich roots music. Fascinating insights and stories abound.

    Great podcast for music geeks
Steve Dawson has earned my trust. If he is interviewing someone I have never heard of, instead of looking for familiar favorites, I now get excited at the prospect of finding out about people I should be aware of. In every case, I’ve been rewarded. Thanks!

    Allison Russell Podcast
I have been a listener from your beginning...love all the interviews and the insights one gains from each session. The interview with Allison Russell was very moving and so heartfelt that I have listened to it several time. Your podcasts are very enlightening and enjoyable. Thanks for keeping Music Makers and Soul Shakers alive during these strange times.

    One big flaw for me
For the most part I enjoy this podcast. I really like the host. I appreciate his knowledge and I really like his demeanor. He asks great questions. I really love when the artist plays, Molly Tuttle is a great example. What I don’t like are the music clips. * It’s confusing. There’s no introduction or set-up, there isn’t any acknowledgement after either. It took me a bit to figure out what was being played. The artist or one of their influences? Direct us to your episode page and give us a link. * Said clips last forever and ever and ever. This does not include clips of the actual artist, those are wonderful!

One of the best podcasts for musicians and fans!
An absolutely incredible podcast that cover many different areas of music, such as playing, writing, production, recording, touring and many other day to day phenomena in the life of those in the music industry. Also, the artists that are chosen as guests are incredible, if you love America roots music from bluegrass to psychedelic boogie and blues- this is the podcast for you!!!

    Fantastic show!
Thank you for creating and continuing this wonderful podcast. It is the best thing, in all media, that I have enjoyed in a long time. Yes, I am also a proud music nerd and fellow slide player! You are a great interviewer, your guests are universally charming, and this will be a significant historic artifact. I only wish I had discovered it sooner, but it’s also been a pleasure to binge! Don’t ever stop!

    Fantastic Podcast!
I've been making my way through the entire catalog of Steve Dawson's "Music Makers and Soul Shakers" podcast and have not been dissappointed. Great guests and Steve's ability to ask insightful and interesting questions brings out a lot of information that I have not heard from the same folks on other interviews. Another bonus are the music clips that are interspersed within each episode that tie to the conversation as it is happening. FInally, the references made by Steve and his guests to various songs and albums has greatly expanded my musical universe. Thanks Steve for a great resource for musicians and music fans.

    Wonderful!
Steve Dawson does a fantastic job as host and interviewer with legendary artists and the people behind the music as well - producers, engineers, etc. A true gem of a podcast for music nerds who are interested the whole gamut, from songwriting to gear to the recording process. Keep up the great work, Steve!

    Phenomenal in-depth musical dialogue
I stumbled across this podcast when I learned Chuck Leavell was a guest. I expected a brief interview, but it came in the form of a two-part podcast that encompassed his entire life, musical beginnings, influences, ups, downs and how he came to arrive at the keyboard music he has played with the Allmans, the Rolling Stones and many more. The host, Steve Dawson, is a working Nashville musician himself, and his musical soul is the one that truly shakes out the amazing stories his guests have from their lifetimes in music. And he doesn't just talk to the people who play an instrument; some of the most fascinating episodes are the ones' he has held with engineers and producers. I am slowly but surely working my way through the entire series and have been overwhelmed by the high quality. Check out Duane Eddy as he recalls incredible details from the '50s, or Amos Garrett talking about how he came to play guitar on 'Midnight at the Oasis', or any other episode. I hope Steve garners the support necessary to continue to produce this amazing podcast - it is a must listen for any music lover.

    Best music podcast
A trusted friend turned me on to this podcast. This is how he sold it. He said Steve Dawson asks the artists the questions you would ask. And it's so true. All of the people he's interviewed so far have great stories and they've all been very open with their experiences. Some of it will challenge what you think you know about music making, the music business, and how your favorite recordings were made. I've been pretty disapointed to this point with music podcasts, but I can't get enough of this one.
  • Nashdrummerdog
    Great Podcast!!!
I really enjoy this podcast. Steve has an easy going style in that he asks great questions and lets the guest talk. Never getting in the way and allowing the truth and wisdom to shine. I always look forward to new episodes. The latest Chuck Leavell episode was an amazing listen. Check it out!

    Great show
One of my favorite shows about music, musicians, and engineers. If you do music you should give this a shot.

    Stellar line-up
I really like Steve Dawson's taste in music, as unpredictable as they are. He likes a diversity of sounds, and coaxes great insights out of his guests with his well-informed questions. Very glad to see another series starting up, and its a great stroke to lead off the new season with the fantastically interesting Jorma Kaukonen. But they are all good to great episodes, regardless of the genre or instrument the guest is known for.
  • snooksfan
    Soooo good!
I'd give this 10 stars if I could. Steve is interviewing SUCH interesting musicians, and getting into details that doesn't come up in other interviews at all. Learning a ton. Thanks a million.....

    Awesome!
You really don’t have to be a fan of the music these artist create to enjoy this show! I’ve learned so much and I’ve opened my catalogue up of music to listen to due to this podcast. A great interviewer Steve Dawson is. I’m a musician and I gained so much knowledge from the artist Steve interviews. He asks great questions that leads the artist into telling their stories. It’s everything I’ve looked for! Thanks Steve! Great job!

    Great, Wonderful Music Conversation
This is a brilliant podcast, and hugely enjoyable for us who love the deep details. Steve Dawson does a brilliant job - always asking the very questions I'm thinking of. Love the untypical guests, too, such as genius drummer Jay Bellerose. And Hal Blaine! Cindy Cashdollar, Frisell, Ribot! I love the fact that Dawson includes the unsung heros - engineers, and producers. The guests Dawson has interviewed have been the same guests that would be on the top of my list. Can't get any better. Thanks Steve!

    Superb
I listen to most of these, here in New Zealand. Steve is so well reserached and unlike many, he's a really good interviewer. The episodes are therefore quite structured but in a good way. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in roots, americana type genres.
