Medicine #148

Created in 2016, Medic Mindset is hosted by EMS Educator, Ginger Locke. She is an Associate Professor of EMS Professions at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas. The podcast started as a resource for her paramedic students as they transitioned to the field. She interviews paramedics, EMS medical directors & EMS educators in long, intimate format. She thoughtfully asks her guests to open up about their mindset, routines, mistakes, thought-processes, and lessons hard-learned. Dr. Maia Dorsett is the Medical Director for Medic Mindset and reviews all clinical content for accuracy according to the most current evidence. While clinical topics are in the show, none of the content should be used as clinical operating guidelines for listeners’ practices.Interesting in connecting? Ginger is always looking to hear from listeners: ginger@medicmindset.comShow notes at medicmindset.com

    Commuting (and community) gold
I cycle commute to my medic shifts and I listen to Medic Mindset as I ride. It gives me food for thought while riding but also continually challenges me to be a thoughtful, educated medic and member of this community. I particularly love the Thinking series-and right after I listened to the Abdominal Pain one, I went to a Abdo pain call! With the discussion so fresh in my mind, I felt refreshed and prepared. What a gift Ginger gives us. This is not dry education-there is a lot of humour, compassion and understanding in the episodes. If you want to elevate your medic work and thought process, absolutely give this podcast a listen.

Great for both new and veteran medics
Medic Mindset is one of the 2 podcasts that I listen to the day they come out. I love not only the medical information I learn on the Thinking series episodes but also that glimpse into the minds of other medics on the anonymous guest episodes, to know I’m not alone in how I feel and think. Even after doing this almost 18 years, I love that I still learn new things or get additional skills to add to my mental toolkit. One example is the death notification episode- this is a situation I thought I did well and I learned so many things that I intend to incorporate on those calls going forward. Ginger is a thoughtful interviewer and tries to think of a variety of frames for situations paramedics have encountered and is empathetic with the experiences they have had and with their frame for what happened. I love how she draws those she interviews out and makes them comfortable sharing all kinds of things. I also love how she asks the questions that listeners might be afraid to ask that may show some knowledge gap (like why hyperglycemia patients often have abd pn and N/V). Thank you, Ginger!

If your an EMT or Paramedic, this is for you!
Ginger is an amazing host and interviews guests in a very creative and natural manner. As the host, she investigates and explores many aspects that make up EMS. Whither it is about better assessments, burnout or how to notify a family that their loved one has passed, Ginger branches out into the topics and connects with other Medics, educators and Medical Directors all creating one inspirational experience after another. If your involved in Emergency Services or are a provider on an ambulance, this podcast is must subscribe and listen from the very first episode on.

    My new favorite show.
I’m always looking for new podcasts to brush up on my skills. Somehow this never appeared in any of my searches until today. I’m hooked. I listened all morning and afternoon while doing work around the house and picked up on so many amazing pointers and take-aways. Wonderful job Ginger. You have a new supporter now. Update: STILL my favorite show. Ginger I love your personality and humor, and I’ve learned so much from your show. Episodes of your topics play in the back of my mind on calls and when treating patients. You truly are a blessing to those still growing into this profession. Thank You!!!

    Outlooks
This is a great podcast sharing the outlooks of medics and how they respond to situations. How they prepare, think, read, relax deal with the job. I'm new to EMS and will be in paramedic school soon; but have been in the first responder field for quite some time and this resonates even to my past job. Can't wait to continue listening as to I'm only on episode 10 and found this recently.

Fall in love with this podcast like I did!
I’m currently a paramedic student at UVU and a fellow student sent me an episode a few weeks ago. I have binged through them all and loved every minute of it! I’m going to listen to them all again. Ginger has brilliant guests and chooses such beneficial topics to cover. This podcast has been clutch as I make my way through my learning and understanding what it will be like when I’m in the field. Thank you Ginger! I feel like you’re the mentor I’ve been missing!

    A different path
I appreciated listening to Ginger in the beginning. The discussions she had on medicine, the experiences that were shared and some opinions that differ then my own were enlightening. I respected Ginger’s intelligence and her hard work in reaching out to the EMS community. I continued to listen to the Podcast as new topics were discussed. However, my coworkers who are salty and those who tend to be right leaning have strayed away. I hope Ginger can return to a more middle of the road Podcast.

    This is dope
Recently discovered this podcast after seeing Ginger give a presentation facilitated by INHS called “EMS Live@Nite.” Huge fan, good people. Ginger obviously loves the field and that’s inspiring as a student just getting started in the field.

This is the reason I went to PMED school
Started listening when I was going through my EMT class, now I’m in the Mat-Su medic program. It’s mostly down to this podcast.

    Unique, entertaining, and refreshing!
This is probably my favorite paramedic podcast. While the podcasts that cover medical topics and in depth pathophysiology are interesting and beneficial they don’t address the medic themselves. I think our mind set in EMS is so important and so much more than just how to address depression. Most all agencies have some form of mental health aid in place but rarely is our mind actually addressed on how to train our mind to prepare for calls, the benefits of visualization, how to aid in decreasing anxiety on certain calls etc. This podcast has been more beneficial to me than any other podcast I have listened to. While I appreciate the learning type podcasts, we as medics need more than just knowledge about disease processes and this wonderful lady addresses the gap that’s missing in our training, our minds.

    The best EMS podcast
Whenever students ask for podcast recommendations, Medic mindset is always the first one I list. I look forward to every episode that comes out - Makes my commute to work well worth it! Ginger is awesome.

    This podcast centers me
If I have a call that doesn’t go as planned or life in general is not going as planned I can put on Ginger’s show and feel SO much better just hearing her voice and usually learn something in the process. -New EMT and Wilderness First Responder

Best way to spend my time
I can’t think of an activity with more payoff to my professional, personal, and mental well-being than listening to the material that Ginger creates. I’m so thankful that our profession is creating material like this, and we need more of it!

I often get asked what medical podcasts I like. Medic Mindset is always at the top of the list. ISimulate is awesome too! That was my request for our training item for our department. Thanks so much for the time you take to put a great podcast together. Excited for the next episode!

    Every Medic/Student needs to SUBSCRIBE
This podcast is phenomenal for not only providers but also students, or even lay-people, who want to truly understand what goes on inside the mind of a Medic. People need to see how seriously this profession is taken by its providers so they can truly appreciate and respect the continuous learning that is required to provide the highest level of care possible. Thank you for what you do Ginger!

    Emt getting knowledge
Last term as I was waiting to take my practical skills exam, I was talking with another student who introduced me to the Medic Mindset podcast. It took me a few weeks from then to start listening, but once I heard the first episode I was hooked. In a matter of about 2.5 weeks I binge listened to every episode. This podcast has made me a better EMT and will make me a better paramedic student next fall. Thanks for a platform where I can learn without feeling like I’m studying! I feel like I’m apart of the conversation.

    Amaze balls
Just wanted to stop by and say I LOVE the podcast. Especially the “thinking” series, I’m a new medic, in the last couple weeks of my probationary phase and I thoroughly enjoy listening to your podcast. It helps me not only think outside the box as far as assessing patients but allows me to decompress at times when I want to “talk shop” but don’t have anyone to talk to.

    Top notch
This is by far, one of the best EMS based podcasts. Well produced, easy to listen to and pertinent topics. Highly recommended.

    Good stuff
I tripped over this podcast. Where have I been?!?! I teach EMS this and that and I came across TOURNIQUETS ARE HURTY and NR PASS-OLOGY. Good nuggets, interesting and pleasent to listen to. Her style reminds me of listening to NPR's FRESH AIR but for EMTs/MEDICs. Easy style, good takeaways and very professional yet relaxed.

Ginger is the best! Hands down the best ENS podcast that exists right now. Just wish she would make more.

    Better late than never.....
I am a 20 year Firefighter / Lieutenant who just obtained AEMT thanks to, in no small part, a passionate and dedicated instructor, co-worker and friend (James Ownbey) who also recommended this podcast to me early on during his class. He is one of those people, like your podcast guests, that make leaning exciting and interesting. Although some of the content of your podcast is above my level of training I love the podcast and it helps keep me focused, enthusiastic and continually learning. Rediscovering this late in a career feels great .... better late than never. Thank you. Joshua

The Podcast that EMS Professional Needs to Hear
MedicMindset is hands down the absolute best podcast out there for EMTs & paramedics (and I would venture to say anyone else involved in EM care). This podcast fills a gap that is left somewhere in between the clinical information shared in the best high-level critical care podcasts out there & the thoughts that we have as medics on a day-to-day basis. Ginger tackles the human factors of EMS care in a way that makes you feel as if you are riding back from a call with two of the very best & most respected medics in the world, privy to listen in on their deepest conversations. If you are a seasoned paramedic, an EMS educator, or someone who has just signed up for their first EMT class, subscribe to this podcast & start listening. You will be hooked. This podcast will open your eyes, be good for your heart, encourage you to think & question your own beliefs & assumptions, and make you feel love & appreciation towards your job again if you have started to lose your fire. “Be like Ginger” needs to be our new mantra in EMS. She has no doubt single-handedly changed the future of the EMS provider mindset for the better.

Just want to say thank you, Ginger
I am currently a EMT student and I found your podcast one night when I was in my textbook feeling like I am never going to learn enough to be good enough at this profession. Your podcast has taught me so much from medicine, to interacting with patients and doctors, and that everyone has been where I am. Thank you for being real, kind and taking time to help students like me be the best they can be for those that need us.

    Start of something
Ginger’s show production and subject matter create the best EM/healthcare podcast out there. The last episode is a perfect example of what is great about this show. Doesn’t need flash to entertain and inform. I look forward to stalking Ginger’s progress for the years to come and am excited about what FOAM has in the future. Thank you for making such a great product.

    Excellent Podcast
I’ve been a medic for almost 3 decades... This podcast is so interesting and well done! Ginger does a fantsatic job disecting the thought processes of medics, how to manage stress and what the guests are passionate about. It's so facinating hearing the differing perspectives from the young folks all the way through medics that have been doing the job for decades. I love how raw and real these talks are. Very well done!

    NPS Ranger listening during commute!
A collateral duty of mine is EMS as a backcountry Ranger and I’ve found this podcast a great place to find relaxation and deep thought. A few of my coworkers listen in and we all discuss episodes shortly after they’ve been released! As an EMT, soon to be AEMT, this podcast is still a great listen and beneficial. Thanks Ginger!

    Truly inspiring!!!
I’m an EMT out of Charleston, SC and I started listening to Medic Mindset when I was in EMT school a few years ago. Ginger Locke is truly inspiring and informative, a true natural to podcasting and paramedicine. I just want to say I appreciate everything she does for us EMS folks. I enjoy learning from the perspective of others, and the experience of her and her guests is priceless. If you even have a slight interest in medicine or the lives of medics, you will be hooked from the very first episode. Keep doing what you’re do Ginger, cheers!

A refreshing listen on my commute
I haven’t been able to get hooked by other EMS podcasts but this is great! Just the right length for a commute and I’m always learning and laughing as I listen. The topics are always engaging and relatable! Somedays with work can be a little more rough, so this can be the pick me up needed to remember why I’m working this job and refocus me on what I’m passionate about.

    Funny and thought provoking
This podcast is perfect for long drives, runs, during dishes or cooking dinner... anytime! I learn something new with every episode and I find myself trying to talk with Ginger and her guests. Each episode makes me laugh out loud and sometimes I have to pause and rewind to make sure the good info sinks in. Ginger is so good at digging into the minds of the medics on the show. As a medic it’s nice to hear other medics have had the same thoughts, troubles, or feelings as I have experienced. Give it a listen and you won’t be disappointed!

    More than ambulance drivers
Came upon this podcast by chance and I’m glad I did. Love the interaction between Ginger and her guests. Been recommending to all the medics I know. Lots of great information. A must for all medics new and lifers.

    Medic mindset

A Great Dialogue and the Perfect EMS Pillow Talk
Medic Mindset is one of the most unique EMS podcasts! There are other excellent podcasts talking about critical care, EMS news, etc. but they hit most of the EMS "hot topics". Ginger brings to light an entirely new topic of the mind of a medic in an incredibly captivating way that applies to both the newbie and the expert/seasoned provider alike. Ginger gets inside the head of medics, former medics, physicians, etc. and really dives into what makes us tick and how we think. As a medic, medical student, and academically trained in neuroscience... I am intrigued by every episode. Also, I have found the podcast to not just apply to EMS/paramedics, but a number of my medical school colleagues have given it a liste as well and love it. Ginger also has the perfect pillow talk voice that makes this the ideal podcast to curl up with a blanket, grab a cup of coffee, or lay your head down at night and take a listen and ponder the mind of a medic.

Awesome podcast. Ginger’s kind of a big deal.

    Humor and Humanity
Medic Mindset is a deep dive into the psychology of EMS workers with all of their nobility, flaws, brilliance, and passion. Host Ginger Locke draws out her guests like a mint julep -slowly and sweetly, leaving everybody smiling and a bit wiser at the end.
  • Dskyeshroom
Wholesome insight, refreshing way to educate
I have been listening to her show for a while now and each episode only gets better. Her passion to figure out how a medic’s mind processes information helps bring my education as a student into a bigger picture. It encourages the listener to examine themselves, make note of your strengths and weaknesses that you may have never considered until you listen to Ginger talk to her guests. The stories allow you to work through a call, gaining a new idea for a scene, expanding your perspective and knowledge. It’s so easy to listen to - it’s my favorite show to binge to on long drives. If you have any passion for EMS, any little bit at all - you have to listen to this podcast!
