The Drunk Guys Book Club Podcast

165

Each week, the Drunk Guys tackle a famous book while drinking #Craftbeer matching the book, characters, themes, etc. What beer goes with Orwell’s 1984? Founder’s Dissenter IPA, of course. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? Seven pumpkin beers. A great #Podcast for readers, drinkers, or anyone with a raunchy sense of humor. Way better than English class. Keep Nate Away From Dogs
Great podcast- a solid show that keeps in touch with its roots. These three guys put on a laid back podcast that doesn’t disappoint in the beer or the books.

2011 humor & obsessed with bukkake
Good listen if you’re a 16 year old stuck in the 2010s. Host with the deeper voice just discovered he has a penis and dominates with bottom tier sex jokes. Wide breadth of books covered and zero insight. I wish they removed Brother Bukkake and maybe the other hosts could muster an actual thought.

    Demon Copperhead
I came to listen to “book club” type discussion about Demon. I feel like the hosts did have some valid criticisms of the book. However, one hosts did seem to miss the point a bit regarding the people of this area. Or at least fell into the trap of stereotyping them in ways that was one of the main themes of the book. It was very frustrating to hear him continue to say that the characters weren’t “racist or Bible thumping” enough when the author (who is of the area) is consistently throughout the story telling you that is a caricature used in movie and TV shows to marginalize them. Now, I’m not saying those people don’t exist, and some to extreme degrees, but I feel like she did a good job of representing it throughout the book in a realistic way. For example, Demons mother wasn’t religious because she was raised by abusive Bible thumpers. I feel like some of this is a cultural difference. We’ve seen many “racist, Bible thumpers” flooding our area from more blue states and they do seem to be confused by the fact that we aren’t as “racist and Bible thumping” as they anticipated. A man from Chicago called our community, one of the reddest in a red state (not fun, haha) “woke libs” for not electing a n*zi sympathizer as our mayor. The other host did try and communicate this, which I really appreciated, so maybe my frustration isn’t warranted because both sides were represented, but it was hard to listen to someone read this book and walk away with the hate that she’s trying to combat.

My husband made me write this.
Honestly though, if you want a laugh, listen to this podcast.

    When your friends are morons
My friends are morons and I love hanging out with them, especially when they’re throwing back a few cold ones. But they don’t read books. I’m pretty sure most of them don’t even know how to read. That’s where the Drunk Guys come in. Listening to an episode is like hanging out with three friends for an hour talking books, busting balls, and cutting loose. Highly recommend to all.

    Thank you
You guys are so funny 🤣 I love the Ickabog one I read the book to my child not expecting the gruesomeness it scared her very much so I wish I listened to it before I bought the book I might need you guys later on 🍻
  • Yep im hooked
    Breath of fresh air
Finally a podcast that feels like real people having a good conversation. These guys got me back into reading.

    Differentiate voices
Interesting concept. A little hard to differentiate who is speaking. Also, should try being more intentional about the beer/opening and introducing it. Ring a little bell or something.

Pretentious bros talk about books and beer
I like books. I like beer. I do not like this podcast… even though I really wanted it to be a good find. While there is some good commentary about the books, it’s hard to get beyond the dudes’ pretentiousness and cringey jokes that inevitably come up in every episode. I gave it a try - lots of tries actually, with many of my favorite books - but I just couldn’t endure their personalities anymore. And while I enjoy solid beer recommends, it’s not super fun to hear people talk about random beer that they are currently drinking. It’s not like I ran to the store to grab the same six packs that the podcast hosts are drinking. Listening to them describe the random NY beers they consume became unbearable. Try Overdue for a more approachable and enjoyable podcast about literary discussion.

    My favorite book podcast
Two of my favorite things books and beer. I knew i was going to like this podcast just by the name. It did not disappoint. The guys are funny and entertaining. I look forward to new episodes.

    Fun show
These guys are definitely fun to listen to. They know the books, know some history about book and/or author, and they make this entertaining. I love that they approach it with fun banter and still make each book interesting. Thanks for the hard work!

    Pretty Sad
Three hipsters discuss books they don’t understand while raving about a wheaty wheat pastry stout from a New York area microbrewery, preferably in Brooklyn.

    Great Book Club
These fellows hate just about every book--but in the entertainment business breaking things down is always more fun than building them up. The hosts know enough about books and literature to have informed opinions but don't come across as your typical pretentious "book people." Great podcast and worth your listen.

    Very motivational
It is not like other drunk book club podcasts. Instead of reviewing the book after getting drunk they drink as they review so there aren’t many off topic conversations. They also educate the readers on the beers that they drink. They have honest unapologetically opinions which is great. This podcast motivates me to read more.

Kind of alienating to a female listener
I don’t speak for all women, but I found some of their comments to be kind of misogynistic. I know that the defense to this is probably “it was a joke,” but if so, most of the jokes are not very clever or funny (I.e. in high school I liked any girl who wasn’t a fat uggo, etc. etc.). I’m really not a type to be the woke police either but I just found it off-putting
  • k.a.t.a.r.a.
    good mix
a lot of drinking and topic podcasts i’ve heard in the past don’t stick to the topic enough and get derailed by side conversations too much but this one has such a good balance of little humor pieces and side conversations while still actually analyzing the books

    So fun!
I recently came across this podcast via their twitter account. I love the wide range of books they cover! It feels more like a hilarious recap with friends than a posh “book club”. I scrolled through and found their episode in The Secret Garden, and knew it had to be the episode I listened to first, as it is one of my favorite books. I can’t wait to get into the rest of their episodes! Perfect for listening while working, walking, or just sitting around.

Crack open a cold one with these guys! 🍺
As a books and drinks fan the title alone intrigued me. I love the honest opinions in the drinks/beer review and the way these guys just tell it like it is with each episode. One of my favorites was the episode about Shirley Jackson’s Haunting of Hill House. These guys were spot on in their review. I was in stitches laughing or finding myself saying “Yes! That’s exactly right.” since I too read the book and picked up on the same weirdnesses. (Like what even was that weird made up story banter throughout the book?) Great show, great drinks, great reviews! Keep up the great work 😺 - Laura, Host of The Spooked Cat Podcast

    Hilarious
These guys are so much fun! The podcast works toward breaking the gendered stereotype that only women like talking about books. They read a wide range of books, from Pride and Prejudice to Twilight. They take away the intimidation people often feel when they think about reading and discussing books. It doesn’t have to be academic! It can be fun! But the side eye at English majors...I’m hard side-eying your side eye, y’all.

    Sign me up!
I’m not part of a book club and I never have been BUT if I was going to pick one, it’d be this one! Not only do they talk about some of my absolute favorite books but they also talk about another favorite: beer. They cover such an insane variety of novels that there’s bound to be something for everyone and I love the vibe between the hosts. I am just dumbfounded at how many different classics they‘ve done - and really well! I highly recommend The Tell-Tale Heart episode! Definitely subscribe!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Melanie, MoS

    My kind of book club
I really enjoy this podcast. The show has a casual and comfortable tone due to the smooth chemistry of the hosts. Despite what the name might suggest, they all come to the table with well thought out analysis and insights about the week's book. And they present this in a way that is entertaining and light. The way they joke with each other and the subject matter is what really made the show for me. These guys aren't just make you smile funny. You can count on them for a plethora of snorts and at least a few guffaws. I also love the how they pair craft beers with the books they read. This in one book club that is definitely worth your time!

Just a ton of mind numbing beer talk
Pardon the hell out of me for thinking this would be about drunk guys discussing books. It’s just the most boring conversations about how to make beer and sours and hops and oh my gosh blow my brains out. Yep, I thought it would be way more entertaining. My bad.

    Great Gatsby, great episode!
We listened to this one first and we were giggling from beginning to end. 😁

Books + beer = awesome podcast
These guys know what they're doing and are very knowledgeable of their subject: BEER and BOOKS. They're funny, witty, a bit tipsy, and dedicated to giving you the best of the best. Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @mindbloomyou

    Beer and Books!
These guys really dig into the books and compare them to other books in the genre. I’ve listened to three episodes so far, and they’re pretty willing to hit books hard on areas where they aren’t so great — they don’t pull any punches!

A fun take on a book club
Listened to their Great Gatsby episode and it was great! One of the most refreshing aspects of this podcast is just how much they are willing to NOT simply comply with the general consensus of a book and criticize as they please - nothing is sacred and they bring up valid points. Even though I am a lukewarm fan of the book, their points are valid. I found myself laughing along with their banter all the way through, constantly joking about the context of the book and what goes on in it. Don't let their casual nature fool you - they do critically analyze the book, no matter how casual it may be. They are just having fun while doing it. It seems so organic to have people discussing literature seriously without taking out the enjoyment of it. Even to the most casual of readers, they make reading seem fun.

    Books, Beer, and Comedy
Hilarious show with three friends that have great chemistry. They read classics, modern best-sellers, and absolutely random novels, so there's something for everyone! Definitely check it out, you're guaranteed a laugh!

Excellent Conversations on Books and Beer!
Just all around great show. I've gone through and listened to books I have read, not all yet. There are a lot of episodes to dive into. The laid back conversation and insight on books from a comedic point of view is just amazing. I find myself nodding because they nail some of the exact same things I said about a book, and they also point out things I missed. This is now in my rotation and will be diving in the backlog and looking forward to new episodes.

    The best book club!
I am a bookworm and enjoy a good drink. This is definitely an incredible podcast. I like listening to their take on everything! Amazing content. I feel like everyone needs this podcast in their life! 👏🏻📚🍻

    Addicting and Fun!
This is the type of podcast that I look forward too. Two friends enjoying a lighthearted conversation about something I may not know. You get a nice overview about classic books you may not have read...yet. Though I am not a drinker, they make me envious of their appreciation of the drinks they are sampling and their great discriptions:)
  • Quiz And Hers Podcast
    Delightfully Irreverant
This is definitely not your mother's book club. Three buddies give their hilarious takes on classic literature and swap craft beer recommendations. If you're a book lover, you'll love this podcast. If you're not, this podcast just might change your mind.

    Boozy Bookclub Bros!
It takes a special podcast to come for an all time fave book but keep me laughing! Our podcasters manage to sum up a novel about the disillusionment of the Jazz Age with the sentence, “Everyone is trash and all dumb.” I love their descriptions of craft beers and new takes on classic books!
  • Auroravlad
    Interesting Perspective
While I’m used to hearing English teachers and my fellow ladies discuss literature, it’s interesting to hear how a group of guys chilling and having a beer respond to both best sellers and classic lit. While I don’t always agree with their assessments, I can agree that most literature should be read over a good beer.

    Great podcast
Everyone and their mother has a podcast these days. These guys have an interesting and unique concept that they execute superbly. Three friends banter over books while they drink and describe beers. You’ll learn a lot about books and types of beer styles and hops. What’s not to like?

Drunk Guys Book Club Meets Cheers
Love listening to these guys talk prose. As an English teacher and lit lover, it’s nice to hear males talk literature with so much enthusiasm. Every time I hear them I think about Sam, Coach Ernie, Norm, Cliff, Frazier, or Woody from Cheers. I can picture these guys around a bar talking intelligently trashy about not-so-trashy lit. Keep up with the classics and the suds but get Carla or Diane to give you guys a ride home! Well Done!

I was looking for a book recap and found these guys. At first I though, uh no, book clubs are not for guys. But they’re geniuses and hilarious!!

The approach of having inhebriated men discuss books is quite humorous and entertaining way to pass the time on long car drives or doing chores around the house. A must listen for all those who enjoy books and banter.

Recaps and Beer and that’s it
Cool concept. Glad there are other people that feel like beer and reading are a great pairing. Book selections impressed me a lot, great range of genre and era. Dudes seem likable enough too but after going through a couple episodes covering books I’ve read, they pretty much just plot point by plot point recap the whole book while cracking open different beers. Not a whole lot of opinion or insight going on so it’s just not my cup of tea. But if it sounds like yours, get after it.

    Laughing Listener
I found this podcast because I searched for “Catcher in the Rye,” one of my favorite books. Not surprisingly, not many podcasts out there on that book. Drunk Guys BC’s first episode, though, is about that book and they hate one of my favorite books! But I found their take refreshing, supported, thoughtful, and reasoned. I still love the book and the protagonist, but I realized for my very personal reasons. I keep listening because the podcast is hilarious, though. I was a Lit major in college, and it’s cool to hear non-academic conversations on classic lit. The conversation is hilarious and crass and also intelligent. Also, I almost did my senior thesis on Hemingway and the DGBC guys hate Hemingway, and you know what, it made me consider that I like certain books and authors for very academic reasons. This podcast has gotten me to expand my literary and my beer horizons. You’ll actually learn a lot about ales, lagers, breweries, etc. If you want to really laugh, listen to the Grapes of Wrath episode (seriously) and the 50 Shades of Grey episode to get a feel.

    Big fan
I love listening to these guys talk. They’re super funny, really knowledgable about history, and always give different perspectives on the text. One of the few podcasts I listen to and always interesting/funny. 10/10
  • Atblanton
I so wanted to like this...
I really wanted to like this podcast. It’s like Drunk History but reviewing books, right? Maybe not. This show lacks the diversity of Drunk History so what you have is a bunch of white guy’s spewing misogyny and homophobia and giggling at each other’s bro jokes. They don’t even seem to like books in general. It’s a no for me, Bro.
  • Zjkelsdg
    Best Podcast about Literature!
I teach college-level literary analysis courses and listen to many podcasts analyzing novels, so my days pretty much revolve around the discussion of literature. That being said, this is by far the most entertaining discussion I get to listen to! I always end up laughing out loud and appreciate that the hosts don’t hold back. If I wouldn’t end up getting fired, I’d recommend this to students as a way of showing them literary discussions don't have to be dry and only for people with PhDs. Thank you, and I’d love to hear you discuss The Dark Tower series!
