Classic lit with a modern tone, every other week. From the creators of Myths and Legends, comes an altogether same-but-different podcast set in the world of classic lit. These are the stories of Dracula, The Time Machine, The Three Musketeers. They're stories written by Jane Austen, Shakespeare, and H.P. Lovecraft, but with a casual, modern tone. Listen as Jason and Carissa Weiser breathe new life into the classics and tell the stories of some of the greatest books ever written.

    BRING IT BACK!
Will echo what other reviewers have said. GREAT podcast. One of my all time top 3 pods. But they say they are going to do more episodes… and then they don’t. I can wait for awhile. But the hiatus-es (hiati?) are getting longer and longer. I truly hope the creators are doing well and that no personal tragedy has befallen them thus prohibiting us from excellent new content. This is such a great show — way better than their other shows. They should dump the other stuff and just do this. It’s a must for people who either don’t have time to read or are intimidated by the dust on old book covers. BRING IT BACK!

    Bring it back!
Loved this show and have been waiting for its return for years. It’s far better than “Myths and Legends” and wish it would come back.

    YOU LIED
I love this podcast, BUT FOR GODS SAKE, YOU said you’d have a season finale 2 weeks after the last episode. ITS been 2 YEARS and zilch nothing radio silence and you did the same with scoundrel and best of the worst, I still give five stars because I love your podcasts, and I know you probably will never read this, but at least tell us something about the future of your other podcasts on myths and legends. Please I beg of you, I love your podcasts, but you used to do so much more, and it makes me sad that you no longer do that.

I’m not looking forward to the day when I’ve listened to all of the episode. You would think I would ration these out and listen to them here and there, but they are so good, I’ve been engulfing each episode like a sugar addict in a candy shop!

    Missing this!
I can’t count how many times I’ve listened to these over and over hoping one day I’ll open it to find new episodes. Telepathically begging you to do ANYTHING by Jules Verne. Can’t wait for the comeback. Finger’s crossed its soon.

    Great Podcast
This is a very entertaining and satisfying podcast. You’ll enjoy it as long as you can handle the lack of new episodes. Edit: I listened to all the episodes again(it took like one day), and I think this is a better podcast than myths and legends.

    Wonderful Storyteller!
I came to Fictional from listening to Myths and Legends. Jason is the best storyteller I have ever heard tell a tale, from the use of the pitch of his voice to properly pausing when the story calls for it to explaining a scene only for it to completely disintegrate into a whole new unfolding scene with a completely unexpected twist. I keep coming back for more! Thank you to both Jason and Carissa for endeavoring down this path in life. You are both awesome!!
  • TreeMac4
    Best storyteller
With the ways these stories are presented in this podcast it’s like you’re reading them for the very first time. It’s so brilliantly done! I love “The Count of Monte Cristo” but I know that lots of folks can’t “get through the book.” So I would advise to listen to it on this podcast. Any of the books really. The Edgar Allen Poes were delightful - again you may know the stories - but not the way Jason tells them! Updated 2023: I love to go back & listen to previous recorded stories. I always catch something witty or an interesting discourse that brings the story to a whole new light. Thank you for this wonderful podcast!!

    A Must Listen
Fantastic retellings, complete with some discourse explaining themes and tropes for some of these stories. Every time I see a new episode pop up, I treasure my time listening. Many are stories I would have never heard or read otherwise, that I am so glad I got to hear in this medium. I’d love to hear White Fang (only book to ever give me nightmares for some reason), and The Picture of Dorian Gray.

    Beyond Amazing!
totally story time! this podcast is so amazing... literally the ONLY problem I have with it... there's a serious lack of new episodes! please continue this podcast, don't let it die! it's way too good. this is just like myths and legends podcast, only even better because fictional stories, especially the genres chosen, are just better from a narrative perspective. PS— do Call of the Wild and Treasure Island, please!

Long time fan of all of Jason and Carissa’s pods but this is my favorite by far! I only wish there were more episodes!

    Phenomenal!
This is one of my absolute favorite podcasts, especially the Sherlock Holmes episodes! The modern interpretation of these classic stories is top tier dudes. Please please please do more episodes!

    A rare treat!
I always enjoy these episodes. Each new story posted is a happy bonus to my podcast routine - one that I make sure to listen to when I can give it my full attention. I particularly enjoyed listening to the “Time Enough at Last” episode. I’d seen the Twilight Zone episode ages ago, but I never knew it was based on a book.
  • Post prey Mama
    Love this!
I have really enjoyed these retelling of some super boring old books, especially the Count of Monte Cristo {ahem} which hasn’t been completed yet. Favorite quote from this interpretation was describing Fernand as the “pale man bathed in rage sweat.” Keep up the great work.
  • Sunlight_Whale
    Best podcast ever
I love it. Has just the right amount of pop culture references and hard facts from the story. My faves are the Sherlock Holmes episodes. Anyway thank you for everything and I love you. Take all the time you need, we all support you and love your work

    Great!
May be my second favorite podcast, right after myths and legends. Edited * favorite podcast and happy to wait as long as needed between episodes, thank you all!!!
  • Dearestfreshness1129
    Good take on classic fiction!
I’m an English major and a Sherlock Holmes fan so was apprehensive about this podcast - but it’s so good!! Really great Holmes adaptations. Funny but respectful of original characters and tone.

I never write reviews, but I wanted to support Jason and Carissa. What they do on Fictional is unparalleled. Whenever it comes out, it’s the first thing I listen to, above any other new podcast episode. Would I love a more consistent schedule? Sure, but not at the sake of the host’s mental health. We’ve all been burned out a time or two. And honestly, every episode is worth the wait. Thanks for the content, guys. This Humanities major’s heart is so happy with every listen.

So excited your back with another Fictional. Never miss a Myths and Legends. Love it so much I bought a subscription. Thank you for hours of listening fun.
  • HungryEars
    So excited this is back!
Excited this is back! Also, Jason, you don’t owe anyone anything. We love your work, but you’ve got to do what works for you and your family. And sometimes that means taking time off from projects. We will be here to listen whenever you get back to it. Don’t burn yourself out!

    Host Just Won't Commit
I love this show and Myths and Legends, but this thing has been put on hiatus several times, and the most recent update we had was for July, and that came and went. It's good when it's around, but it's never around for more than a handful of episodes at a time. Some stories are just left unfinished. It's quite sad really.
  • ThatOneGhostie
    Love it!
As a hardcore Sherlock fan, I have to admit that I had my doubts about the Sherlock episodes, but after listing to them, all my doubts where blown to the winds. I love the was Jason brings life to these classic characters, and hope that he’ll do more <3

    Please continue
I really like this podcast but I’m also disappointed that you have done what you did earlier in the shows history which is say you are working on an episode but the show just goes dorment. I think you should do much more for this podcast and do more on Sherlock Holmes and please please do the rest of Dante’s inferno I’ve been waiting so long
  • nerd4545454
    Huh
What happened to the series for July
  • fearofpotatoes
    I think you should…
Personally I think you need to spend more time on fictional and less time myths and legends and the reason being is that I feel like you have covered most of the big myths and legends and are just doing episodes on rare super short stories. I miss things like the saga of the volsungs and Norse tales but you have run out of those stories so I think you need to pickup fictional and maybe tackle some more Sherlock Holmes tales or father brown or even some of Agatha Christy’s many tales.
