Trail Correspondents

155

Trail Correspondents is a teleportation machine to the trail- in audio form. Every other week, a select handful of thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and the American Discovery Trail, give us a glimpse into the world of long distance backpacking. Through their eyes and vocal cords, we learn all about the highs, lows, and nitty gritty details that go into a half-year, cross-country trek. Trail Correspondents is the next best thing to being on trail yourself.

    LOVE!
I love everything about this podcast and can’t wait to listen when each episode comes out. It is inspiring, informative and fun! I love listening to each person’s perspective while they’re on the journey. It makes me feel like I’m on the trail with them! I have been listening since the first season, and I am thrilled that it is back. Thanks to all who contributed to this wonderful podcast! The only thing that would make it better is having more episodes to listen to.

    Used to be really good.
It needs more variety. Different trails. Bikepacking. Something. All the stories and comments are redundant from years prior. If you’ve heard one season, you’ve heard them all.

Great resource for aspiring thru hikers
I hope one day I’ll be able to embark on a long distance thru hike. In the meantime I’m enjoying my short stints outside and doing a lot of research. This pod is a great resource to hear a wide variety of experiences. It’s quelling some of my fears (ie. town resupplies, hitching) and giving great gear tips on what works and what doesn’t. Helpful as I build up my systems. Hope it gets revived!

    Among the best read-along podcasts
I can’t say enough good things about this podcast. Great content, great host chemistry, solid production—Davos’ Fingers is everything you want in a ASOIAF podcast. I’m on my first read in the books and they make the experience more enjoyable.

Binging before my first thru-hike attempt
I’m here, training for the AT in India, and this has been a godsend of stories and information that will help in my thru-hike attempt starting in April 2020. I’m putting together gear lists on my phone as I listen to The Trek’s correspondents doing the same and reviewing their’s. Meal planning while listening to them talk about Hiker Hunger. I do my training hikes, strength training, or eating a meal and enjoy listening and taking notes and just investing myself in the stories. Thank you for this!

    A mixed bag
Some reports are interesting, but a lot of correspondents ramble on way too long. And there’s nothing like getting scolded by a SJW hiker who thinks ranting is persuasion.

    You’re saying it wrong
The way you pronounce “Appalachian”, it’s bad, so bad.

most interesting part of trail diaries IRT
only listened to 25% of one so far but I'm hooked. Stories from the Hikers themselves recorded as they hike. Incredibly enjoyable for me. My experience is section- hiking in SNP in the early- 80's

Execution is meh; too much self-absorption and unedited rambling
Surprised by the 5-star reviews. I love the concept of the show; would love to see it produced and tightened up to clean up the massive repetition among the thru-hikers’ responses. Was alarmed by the Canadian woman who boasted of forcing her way into a strangers’ car. I get why she thinks it’s funny or brazen, but it’s probably illegal and doesn’t reflect well on her or the show. Wish they’d been more thoughtful in selecting folks; some of them are just boring, some of them seem dangerously self-absorbed. There’s a lack of perspective; 20 minutes-worth of rambling from multiple hikers about cold-soaked oats isn't really interesting. This show would be stellar if it were produced, edited, and cleaned up.

    A lot of trail trama!
I come from years of trail running and spending a lot of time on trails. I’ve gotten interested in doing a multi day hike or fastpack which I’ve done before, so this was great for information. My reason for being on trails is to be at peace in beautiful quiet, so hearing about “tramilies “ I can’t even say it, makes me quiver! And all the drama and making group decisions, no way! So I just love hearing this trail drama unfold. Great job!

    Fascinating!
This pod is the thru-hiking equivalent of reality tv! I can’t get enough of it. All the trail correspondents are so interesting and different. Give it a listen!

    Outstanding
As o fall deeper and deeper into theTrek’s content, this was a real treat- just listened to my first episode and loved it. Anyone that can thru hike full time and be a professional beer drinker while doing so is doing it right. Listening to people’s stories while they’re in the thick of the adventure is a ton of fun. 👍

You Feel Like You’re On Trail
I have LOVED getting to know these hikers. This podcast feels so intimate and I feel like I know these hikers even though they’re thousands of miles away. I’m not a hiker myself but my friend (Prophet) is a correspondent so it’s fun to learn about hiker culture and lingo and lifestyle... basically everything and hear everyone’s stories.

    Great Show
Wonderfully produced and thoroughly entertaining, Trail Correspondents offers the insights from people out hiking various trails. Love it! I listened to a few episodes while completing a section of the Appalachian Trail this year and enjoyed hearing everyone's thoughts. Zack, keep up the fantastic work!

    Deep and Insightful
Love the podcast! I really dig how you get to learn about not just the fun experiences but also the challenges that some people face to thruhike. Keep up the solid work! PCT 2020! Mitch

    Compelling Stories With Insight
Wow the details and information are really helpful. What sets this podcast above and apart are the interesting storylines shared by an array of unique people with different cultural, lifestyle and world views.

    This podcast is the BEST!
I listened to all the episodes on Backpacker Radio last season and have been enjoying hearing this year's hikers getting under way. I think this format is fantastic, fun, educational, and I enjoy listening as I'm doing my own training hikes for a somewhat shorter walk this summer. Thanks so much!

Hikers hiking and talking about hiking!
I LOVVVVE this podcast and all the different perspectives, as well as hearing about the different trails. I look forward to hearing their updates so much! It also helps inform and encourage me to someday fulfill my dream of attempting a Thru Hike! Good luck all you sweaty, adorable, stinky hikers! -FoxKitty

Worthy (and more) successor to Sounds of the Trail
Zach Davis has been providing long-distance hikers with excellent information and resources in a variety of media for several years, starting with his book, "Appalachian Trials" — for my money, the single most important book any aspiring Appalachian Trail hiker can read, thanks to its focus on the mental aspects of the hike. And of course he is the guy behind The Trek (thetrek.co), an excellent, interesting site with a ton of information about long-distance hiking. In the past year or so, he and his podcast partner, Juliana Chaunce, have launched Backpacker Radio and now Trail Correspondents, a spin-off of BR's excellent 2018 series of ongoing reports from current long-trail hikers. I just want to say a big, big thank you to Zach and crew for bringing us the TC show. When Sounds of the Trail petered out after a couple of fine seasons, I really missed hearing directly from hikers on the trail. Now with TC, that concept is back, bigger and better than ever, well organized and fun. If anyone wants to hear the Season 1 correspondents, do it through the Backpacker Radio podcast, which is also outstanding ... and frequently very funny.

    Hooked
As an aspiring thru hiker (I know...just get out there already) the end of the first season left me wanting more. The second season is finally here! Thank you to The Trek for putting this podcast together.

    Love it!
What a beautiful way to record the thoughts and feelings of a thru hike. It gives you that itch to just get outside and do something. Also, GO FROZEN!
  • Katharine NR
    Such diverse stories
A great cast of hikers, all of whom have little in common but somehow fit together just right. Might make you want to get outside, so be warned.
  • Eric for the win!
    First one! Suckers
Didn’t listen to it yet but I’m sure it’ll be at least adequate but you know what, it doesn’t matter because I am the first one! Woo!
