    Grateful since 2019
I am beyond grateful for this Podcast. I have been learning about DBT since 2017 and found this podcast right in the beginning of 2019. It has helped me change my life and learn so many skills along the way. I am a better leader, a better partner, a better parent and a better friend, especially to my self. Thank you, a deep, deep thank you. I constantly go back to re-listen to episodes. I’ve heard every one at least twice and am going through now for a third time. I refer my team and friends as often as I can, because I believe everyone can benefit from DBT. Thank you for changing my life.

    My favorite podcast!
Thank you Marielle & Ed, this podcast has been a huge help for me.
  • Very short!
To the Skillful Podcast! Hi! Best podcast I have.
My therapist recommended this show in particular for me. She picked a great show. Because I’m old and kind of walking chaos I have not yet listened to all the episodes. My fault folks. What I love best about this show is that it doesn’t feel scripted I love the familiar manner you display in the banter. I love it all. I do wish you’d have more episodes, like weekly would be wonderful. But I’m also aware that this is expensive to set up and do. So I really can’t complain at all. I listen to more podcasts than this on autism and adhd and trauma. But this podcast is at the top of my list. It’s nice to hear directly from professionals who are struggling too it makes you good folks more comfortable and relatable. Big hug and lots of good energy are here on this show. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars! Take care everyone and stay safe out there! Use these tools wisely they actually work, but you have to be honest and patient with yourself and others and gradually this stuff works it’s way in . Things actually can get better. At 75 this last September. I am happier. I’m better for listening to this . It takes a while, this is not a quick fix but if you are fortunate to quickly grasp this information you will improve!

    Sooo helpful!!
Excellent supplement to my regular DBT therapy. I listen in the car to help me reinforce and deepen skills. Advice is very accessible and well presented.

    Relationship help
I often listen to this on my way to work and find a useful way to practice the tools with my coworkers. It’s also very helpful for my family relationships. The acronyms help me remember what I need to cover. Recently, I listened to the assertiveness podcast and was relieved that they emphasized the differences between family/friend relationships that are very important to me versus relationships with acquaintances.

    So helpful
I’m a counselor at an eating disorder treatment center and this podcast is SO helpful in fine tuning by DBT skills. It’s my favorite content to listen to on the way to work. It’s grounding and helps me in my personal life as well. Thank y’all so so much.

From a person who needed DBT
I really appreciate this podcast for helping me navigate a very difficult time in my life. My couples therapist suggested i “look into” DBT to help with my very strong emotions at that time. There were few resources for a person on the outside to simply find out more….even to define it. This podcast was a lifeline for walking me through the skills and providing scenarios for them. An invaluable resource for the novice. And theyare so pleasant and kind. Normal fabulous people. Easy to listen learn and apply their episode content. Thank you for providing this service for those who may not be able to access a therapist for various reasons. Ps. SO GLAD YOURE BACK

    10 Stars!!
This a ten-star podcast! It has changed my life and the way that I approach my relationships to myself and others. Before I started listening to The Skillful Podcast, I’d already been in therapy for a couple of years, mostly using cognitive behavioral therapy. My daughter, who is a school psychologist, had told me about DBT. I had read a book about DBT. I had downloaded an app to help me practice the principles of DBT. But not until I started listening to the discussions between Marielle and Ed on this podcast did I ever really “get it.” They describe so many real-life applications of DBT that helped me understand and see when and how I needed to be using the techniques. It’s helped me develop a better sense of myself, my emotions, my beliefs, my assumptions, my goals, my values, my personal worth. DBT is a life-changer, and Marielle and Ed are to be commended for bringing these ideas into an easy-to-access venue and in an easy-to-understand way. If you’re struggling in any area of life, the time you devote to listening to The Skillful Podcast will be time well-spent!

The most helpful, practical, relevant, potentially life changing podcast I’ve ever listened to!
DBT is amazing. This podcast breaks it down into actionable bite sized chunks such that practicing a skill taught in any one of the episodes has the potential to profoundly positively impact your life. I used to think DBT was only for borderline personality disorder, but it’s not - ANYONE - especially those with big emotions and a tendency to dissociate or self-medicate - can benefit. The templates provided for interpersonal communication are so helpful. A million stars!

    Wonderful, informative, and lighthearted
This is one of my favorite podcasts. The hosts of this podcast do such a great job explaining DBT skills in a lighthearted and easy to understand manner. They provide real life examples that are relatable, which makes implementing these skills a little less daunting.

As a therapist, I find this podcast so useful and helpful. Both speakers are very engaging and clear and concise. Thank you for this podcast.

    Great Podcast!
I love Ed and Marilee’s podcast. This duo have a great rapport and explain DBT skills in a manner that is easy to understand and absorb. This podcast has been SO incredibly helpful to me in my healing journey. I enjoy listening to it and I’m glad that they have begun to record again.

Thoughtful and brief, perfect for review
After going through a DBT program this is so wonderful to review the skills. It is also perfectly accessible to someone who does not have a base knowledge of DBT, as they explain everything in terms anyone can understand. Highly recommend if you are looking to explore DBT concepts on your own for the first time OR if you’re looking to brush up your existing DBT skills and refresh/expand your knowledge base.

    The Help You Need
Incredibly thoughtful and well put together analysis, explanation, and path to implementing DBT skills. Does the subject better than any other I’ve come across.

    Outstanding
This podcast is an absolute gem. They do an excellent job at (1) proving information about DBT therapy and (2) conducting a podcast. Unfortunately so many podcasts have great info but are completely lacking in #2. NOT the case here! Soothing, professional voices, great conversation, high quality audio, can barely detect if guest is phoning in vs in person, hosts are extremely well-prepared, no dead air, etc etc.

    Better than AA
My partner suffers from alcohol use disorder. After suffering some severe seizures and hospitalization where he detoxed. He was released with nothing more than a typed list of rehab center all of which base treatment on AA precepts. He committed to try one. Despite being told there would be therapy what he experienced was other recovering people who most relied on guilt and shame techniques. After this unhelpful program he relapsed. A therapist I had suggested he try a DBT program. It was so helpful. I found this Podcast and it has been so helpful for him to continue to practice skills. It helps me too. I find the skills really apply to anyone. He is also doing therapy privately but this podcast has been incredibly helpful. He is 2 and a half years sober. Thank you for helping him find his way back to health and contentment and me! ❤️

    Incredibly helpful
My partner goes through intense episodes of emotional disregulation. Her therapist had her go through the DBT program. This podcast is an incredible resource. It’s a place for her to strengthen and remember her skills and it helps me to better understand what she’s going through so I can better be there for her when I can. Thank you so much for this wonderful resource!

    Wow! Thank you!
I’ve been in therapy for decades and this past January (2021) I started DBT. My life has changed. I found this podcast this week and I can’t get enough! I love how they talk back and forth and explain things so it is not just listening to someone talk at me. They provide examples and analogies that are the icing on my current therapy cake. Thank you!

    Very helpful!
This is an easy way to access DBT skills in addition to regular talk therapy. Thank you for creating this podcast! This is also a great way for everyone to learn about emotions.

This podcast (helped) to save my relationship/marriage
My husband has a psychology background (was in a clinical psych PhD program for 4 years) so he knows a fair amount about psychology/therapy/etc and had asked me for years to read his DBT manual (the same manual this podcast goes off of) because I was terrible to him in arguments, don’t handle criticism (from him) well and rarely took accountability for my actions. Arguments always escalated and it was getting to the point where we would have weekly 4+ hour long arguments (not even exaggerating here) and I was worried it would never get better. I knew what my issues were but I wasn’t able to stop myself in the moment from getting defensive, making excuses, or getting mean. (Bah!) Finally, I found this podcast (intended to send it to my cousin who has bipolar to help her) but started listening to it, for “the heck of it!” Oh. My. God. What a game changer. I LOVE the hosts, they talk through the therapy concepts and make it relatable, and honestly I go to it now when I feel like I’m getting stressed out or want to understand the “other person’s side” if I’m in an argument or have a disagreement with someone. With this year (COVID), I think we could all use a little therapy and DBT. But wow, since listening to this podcast, my husband and I RARELY argue. I think we had one fight that lasted under 2 hours in over 2 months... that’s honestly insane! He can’t believe after all his training and explaining of concepts to me, that just finding the right podcast/modality to have someone else explain the concepts to me was all it took! (Ha, ha!) I can’t say enough about this podcast. I make sure I listen to at least 3-4 episodes per week, usually I listen to it once per day though. I will forever recommend it and I hope the hosts never stop doing what they’re doing. They’re incredible and changed my life for the better. Thank you again, from a lifelong fan <3 P.S. my husband thanks you guys, too ;)

    Well-constructed and fun
I recently discovered I benefit greatly from DBT, and I’m going through a workbook with my therapist slowly and using this podcast as a supplement. I think this show is tops. It’s well constructed, it respects your time and appeals to varied learning styles. The information design! So good! The show notes, which I use as a basis for a writing reflection, are invaluable for reinforcing what happened on a listen. It all belies a ton of planning and thoughtfulness. The examples used by the hosts are diverse and sincere, and the counter examples are insightful. I usually find it easy to relate to some aspect of a concept. The hosts themselves are relatable while keeping the train moving. Highly recommend!

Practical tips to improve communication and relationships
I am so grateful to learn about this podcast. It has helped me to work on mindfulness, how to effectively manage my emotions and improve how I show up in my relationships. Thank you! I’m happy to see you resumed your show this year. Please keep the episodes coming!

Just what I was looking for!!
In addition to myself, I have a family member struggling with anxiety, depression and unregulated emotions. He recently reached out to me for help as a listening ear and sounding board to help him on especially rough days. I too can relate and have worked through some DBT and Mindfulness exercises on my own over the years. This excellent podcast is a much appreciated tool I will be adding to my “coping” and “understanding” toolbox. I have referred my family and friends as well. Thank you for sharing these very helpful principles with a compassionate and hopeful perspective.

Thank you for both of your dedication! This is my favorite dbt podcast. I just enjoy their voices and personality. Great info in a way I can understand. Thanks for repping The Bay so well!

    Fantastic DBT Resource
The Skillful Podcast was recommended by a DBT group leader, and I have found it an amazing resource and supplement for using the skills that have changed my life. The podcast leaders, Marielle and Ed, are so warm, human, and relatable! I miss the regular updates, and (if feasible), I hope the podcast will pick back up and continue.

What a wonderful way to serve your fellow humans.I got so many goodies out of this podcast I appreciate you both

    Truly, thank you.
I know this podcast isn’t a replacement for therapy and I know you guys bare no responsibility for my mental health (ie this is for educational purposes only and such), but I still want to truly thank you for so many of the episodes of this free podcast. I’m an adult working a min wage job with no health insurance... I can’t afford therapy, at least not right now. But this and other free resources have helped me make improvements on my BPD and other issues. I know DBT is supposed to include much more than only the skills, but learning the skills from free resources like this is literally all I can afford right now. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate this free resource.

    Very helpful!
Great introduction to many useful mindfulness and emotion regulation skills. I have never taken a DBT class and still have found this podcast very helpful and applicable to my life. Thanks Marielle and Ed!

    My favorite podcast
I highly recommend this podcast. I have recommended it to many people in my life, whether they were currently struggling or not (because aren't we all at least kind of struggling?) The two presenters are delightful and explain DBT in a very easy-to-understand way. They both seem very likeable and relatable. While I have previously done DBT in person, I am getting a lot more out of this podcast. It has really enabled me to make some positive changes in my life.

    Love it!
Thank you for this podcast. It is so enjoyable to listen to and I love the humor. Reinforces what I learn in group and also explains some things I’ve learned in greater detail.

    Fantastic DBT Podcast
I’ve completed a DBT group class and I like listening to this as a review and to learn new things. I like how they talk about how they personally use the skills and are validating. Please continue to make this podcast, I check often for new episodes. Can you do an episode on building mastery next? Also I miss Ed! You guys are the best, thank you!

Wonderful, helpful, and fun podcast - so much to love
There is so much to love about this podcast! I find it soothing to listen to and incredibly useful with lots of tips to help us all cope with common life challenges. The hosts, Marielle and Ed, are both very intelligent therapists with a lot of experience yet they’re so down to earth and approachable; it’s effortless to listen to them in conversation with one another. They have a comfortable rapport, a good sense of humor, and the ability to stay focused so they never veer far off course (something I find is lacking in other podcasts). They never throw jargon around that you don’t understand; instead they use clear, everyday language to explain things (btw, you don’t need to be familiar with DBT to get a lot out of this podcast; I still don’t know what it means!). Their knowledge is obvious but never felt over my head because of their unpretentious and effortless style. Sometimes they talk about their own struggles and how they use the DBT skills in their lives which I think humanizes the podcast without ever becoming overindulgent. I can’t recommend this podcast highly enough.

Informative and fun to listen to
I just became familiar with DBT (where was it all my life?!), and the therapist I’m working with is great. But sometimes the concepts and skills are a bit difficult to wrap my head around or to practice. It’s been so helpful to listen to these two talk about and reinforce what I’m learning about in my sessions. They keep it very real and light hearted at the same time. They give great examples and have the ability to unmuddy the waters when I’m feeling a little confused. The person I’m actually working with is amazing, but I only meet with her once a week. I find I’m listening to the podcasts almost every day for reinforcing DBT skills and concepts. Keep up the amazing work!!! Love it!

    Delightful presentation of skills
When Marielle and Ed speak, they convey wisdom and kindness. Thank you for sharing your time and stories with me as I continue to work on "a life worth living". I am able to hear the objectives of each segment immediately, which is much appreciated, because sometimes I do not have the time to listen to other dbt podcasts for ten minutes in before points are made.

Relatable, quality, in-depth examination of skills
I went through these skills in a DBT group a few years ago, and looked for a podcast to revisit them and see how I relate to them now that I’ve had some time to practice. The quality and depth of this podcast is great. I love how they use concrete and relatable examples to show how to use the skills. They also are authentic and open about their own struggles with emotional regulation at times, which feels validating. DBT skills are useful for everyone, and they have changed my life. This podcast is a gift!

    Helpful and soothing
I just started listening to this podcast after rediscovering DBT. So clear, kind, concise, and helpful. I love how Ed sort of plays the “patient,” explaining how he applies the concept in his own life (and that he’s a fellow Sudoku distraction player).

Great DBT resource for clinicians and clients
I’m a clinician that provides DBT informed care and I love this podcast. So informative. I have recommended it to clients to reinforce knowledge of skills in between sessions and to other members of my consultation team to strengthen our own knowledge and use of the skills.
