Old Gods of Appalachia

3,858

In the mountains of central Appalachia, blood runs as deep as these hollers and just as dark. Since before our kind knew these hills, hearts of unknowable hunger and madness have slumbered beneath them. These are the darkest mountains in the world. How dare we think we can break the skin of a god and dig out its heart without bringing forth blood and darkness? Old Gods of Appalachia is a horror-anthology podcast set in the shadows of an Alternate Appalachia, a place where digging too deep into the mines was just the first mistake.

    Exceptional, but please…
Absolutely love the stories and performances but please offer an ad free subscription option. There are just too many ads. The show is worth paying for if the ads can be avoided. I spent a good bit of time in the Appalachian mountains in my younger days and I can easily feel these stories come to life among those deep forests, ravines and mountain tops!

    Probably…
the best podcast I’ve listened to, family. The writing is phenomenal and I love the female centric plot lines. Feeling genuinely glum that I finished season four and eagerly await the next season.

    Love it
WONDERFUL narrator, he sounds just like home! Absolutely hooked from the first listen, great music and story telling

Immersive, atmospheric, and spooky - just perfect horror.
I am a huge fan of all things horror - with a preference for the eerie, strange, and spooky over gore for its own sake. This podcast is some of the best horror storytelling I’ve experienced in any medium, not just podcasts. The intertwined storylines and character set up, together with a mix of Appalachian folklore, immerse you in the story and get you invested in the characters (which may leave you grieving for then down the line). Steve and the other voice actors lend authenticity and depth to the storytelling. My only complaint is I’m all caught up on the content and can’t wait for more episodes to come out!

    Perfect
Just discovered and it’s all I’ve listened to for days. Fantastic story, storytelling, music - I want to buy all their merch and give them all my money.

    Folklore, horror, realism; beautifully melded
I have absolutely loved listening to this podcast, and it has helped me get over the fact that the Silt Verses is over. Well written and well executed. I appreciate the respect for and representation of queer people and lives, without feeling wedged in or disrupting the story. BUT, are we aware that each episode starts with 6-8 minutes of ads?? And then ends with more ads? I much prefer the ones Steve reads, at least they are a good fit for the feeling and volume of the show. The ads feel like too much to me, but I am grateful that the artists responsible for this project are receiving their due. I suppose Ill have to perform my social media rituals and pay my tithe so I can get away from the badgering ads.

Top Tier Podcast with a few minor flaws
First let me say that this is one of the ONLY podcasts I will agree can be reasonably compared to TMA. It is just as immersive, just as complex, and just as well written. I listened to S1&2 twice because I knew it was brilliant and i had to experience it again and I am so glad I did. i am finishing up season 3 and I don’t love it as much, I feel like it is still high quality horror so worth me continuing to listen. I am definitely one of those people who prefers stories about the Walker women and the Underwood family because, duh, witches, and I can’t stand the Barrows. Overall, I have no complaints about the quality of the storytelling. My only issues are: 1. The S2 variation on the main theme song is the ONLY one you need. I get that the lyrics change to fit the theme of the season but, meh, too bad. That is the best version of the song and you should just keep it consistently. S1 and S3 iterations I can’t skip through fast enough. S2 theme I loved and sang along every time. 2. What happened to Cowboy Apshure??????? 3. Voice actor sound levels aren’t always the same as the narration and when a new voice comes in it’s a little jarring. Also, pay no mind to the broken people who complain about things being too woke. They don’t know what they’re talking about. This is such a tasteful and respectfully made podcast. Kudos.

Impressive Tales Told With Heart and Skill
First discovered in August 2024. I’m addicted. Incredible writing and reading talent (or should say … gifts).
  • KarlisaJade
    Meh
I wanted to like it, especially since there are so many 4-5 stars, but I just couldn’t. Listened well into season 2 and just can’t follow. I think it’s the delivery/narration. Not sure. I feel like I’m sitting in church with a preacher that’s hollering and shaking his fist. Makes it hard to focus.
  • amazed1009
    Wow!
What a show! No words to describe the character development and story development. This IS my fave podcast! So glad to hear there is a season 5 on the works!
  • dugbert
Such a show. I wish I could give it more than five stars.
Every episode delivers in such high-quality from writing to narration to graphics, to music. Thank you all so much for your dedication to the craft of storytelling.

    Oops!
I accidentally posted a poor review intended for a different podcast to this one, so I have to recalibrate my reviews! I LOVE this podcast. It’s excellent.

    CW spoil the show
It’s a cool podcast, but they need to have a link you can click that gives you content warnings because it really spoils the stories and I try my hardest not accidentally read them.

Best fiction podcast I’ve ever listened to
This is, by far, the best podcast I’ve ever listened to. I started listening a couple years ago, thinking it would be another horror podcast. But those first few episodes hooked me into a wonderful journey. Every single episode on this podcast is fantastically written, sound design is crisp and clear, and it pays it all off with the best narrator I’ve ever heard. Hopefully there will be more episodes and more seasons, and if not, then start a new series. It will be worth it.

    WOW 🤯
What an awesome and absolutely AMAZING EPIC EPISODE !

    Love it!
    Great narration and stories.

    Americana at its best
Not only is the storytelling and acting top notch, but it is a joy to hear the rich folklore of Appalachia and America in an entertaining format.
  • sahoenig369
    What an incredible story.
This is my third time through this story and it is just as terrifying and engrossing this time as the first two. The writing, production, and performances are as top notch as anything you will find or Netflix or Disney +. Be warned, this stories are not for the timid or faint of heart. But you WILL BE ENTERTAINED and as frightened as any living soul could ever expect to be! But let’s face it, that’s why we’re here, right? My lingering query: Is a story or a telling? That is the question. I know what I think…
  • The first version was fine
    The BEST
This is hands down the best podcast I've ever listened to. I'm addicted and wish I could afford to give enough to their pattern so I can listen to the other stories.
  • cmart106
    Awesome podcast until season 4
I really loved this show, found it a few seasons in and listened to it non stop for weeks. I was so excited for rhe 4th season to come out, but the episodes kind of disappoint. I get that they’re trying to stretch the story as much as they can, but compared to the previous seasons, season 4 feels shallow and short. Each episode feels more like a preview or a teaser than a full episode. The content is still good, I just wish the episodes were longer or more engaging.
  • emmylou1212
    Beautiful
What a story. It’s like poetry

    Americana in full force
Fantastic podcast with a great feel that is uniquely American. You should definitely check it out! Update: first podcast that made me tear up and put a lump in my throat. Another update: still an excellent show, however the non-linear story does make things difficult to keep up with the large cast of characters as the show continues.

    Love
I really love this pod. I always want more of it so much that I have listened and re-listened, and then re-listened some more. See you soon, family!
  • WardenofMagick
It’s a great show. Update schedule is unpredictable tho.
I love the stories, voice actors and attention to detail. These people really get eldritch horror. :) What I cannot abide; and, whst will make me leave eventually are the long breaks while Old Gods does live shows. This would be tenable, bearable, understandable if they had said, “We will be touring until (date). We will be taking a break until (date). We will return on (date).” I understand that life is unpredictable. But, social media exists to update your fans, your “family.” Not a word for months, tho. I will no longer recommend Old Gods. This is not how “family” behaves; at all. Update: You get 23 minutes of content per episode. The rest is ads. I find I can’t make myself care about this show after the episode upon episode of Jack’s trial. Moreover that they had real big bads like His Name Sounds Like Horned Head But Is Not just sitting quietly listening to testimony in a magic-proofed chamber. Who’d agree to that? And, Horned Head isn’t as terrifying now that he’s been seen to heel and obey. C’mon. It was good while it lasted. I’m out.

    The same
Have listened to a lot. It just does not change good production nice hooks just became boring.
  • Amalthea71
Amazing re-imagining of old lore with a good dose of gothic horror
The writing and oration are suspenseful and engaging. They include new music from brilliant musicians, but the best part is how the writers create a family against the dark and include you as kin.
  • Syri the Beholder
    Thank gods
The stories are winding, but powerful. The writing is downright poetic. Steve’s voice runs the range for jocular to terrifying to disturbingly sexy, sometimes in the same paragraph. I would listen to this man read the phone book, if they still made those. Volume mixing is too quiet in the early seasons (something I’ve noticed with a few Rusty Quill shows) but seems to have gotten better. Love the critique from folks who complain about “wokeness” and “neo-Maoism” in a setting based on historical context where there were, in fact, people of different races and orientations and, terror of terrors, people trying to unionise against horrifically dangerous and exploitative working conditions 😱. We certainly can’t have THAT represented. Think of the children! Not the ones in the mines though, the other ones.

Adore the storytelling, the acting, the music. Class A podcast
This is one of the best storytelling podcasts I’ve ever listened to.
  • blue-collar-dood
    Hate to leave a 3 star…but
I love this podcast, I love the storylines, the gritty dark magical Appalachia mood…but I really dislike the hokey-wokey, neo-Maoist undertones to some of the story lines. Come on family, do better.
  • astockk
    Wow wow wow wowowowow!!
It's UNREAL how creative and talented this cast and crew is. BRAVO 👏🏻
  • LPLDmom
    A little too “woke”…
Started off awesome, then made a hard left turn.
  • Standbyit
    One of the best
Great storytelling, not over acted, the folklore was explained just enough but not to distract from the story. The characters were built up beautifully and then weaved together perfectly. I drive for a living and go through many stories. This has been the best so far.
  • Beer_skeletonizer
    Great podcast
Always look forward to the next episode!
  • Rachelbeatsyou
My favorite podcast of all time

    Love this!
So well written and good! Love it! Love it if you love, tanis, Magnus archives, white vault, nightvale, great stories with so many characters and so much development, and pulls you right in !

    Changed
Been a fan for a few seasons now but this season has been different than seasons before! They’re drawing out every episode with this storyline and then it’s so short with 5+ minutes of ads in the beginning and 5+ minutes of ads at the end. I get the ads but it’s sooo short to begin with!
  • InfG35x
    Ads
You're getting about 6-10 minutes of ads per vs. 12-16 minutes of content. Be warned!
  • CwCurls
    One of the best podcasts!
I listen to alot of podcasts. I’m into sci-fi supernatural stuff and this podcasts is it!!! I get it may say it’s a horror podcasts but for me it’s not that at all!! The way the story is told, the imagery, the way it’s laid out to take you through a journey is amazing!!!! 10/10 rating! Nothing less!!
  • GoodDeal72
    Such an amazing show!
My mom was a professional storyteller who is from the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia, and her original stories took place in this setting. When I heard about this podcast, I had to listen, since Steve and Cam are from the same county as my mom, and I wanted more tales set in the Appalachian Mountains. Wow! Steve and Cam have done a fantastic job in creating this whole new world, while weaving in bits of what life was really like in that time period. It definitely gives the listener that Appalachia flavor while scaring the bejeezus out of you at the same time.
  • LB636783
    Gripping stories!
I love the story telling! My only criticism is that sometimes the volume of the story is much lower than the music and advertisements.
  • jska88
    1&2 great! 3 meh
I love love love seasons 1&2 and still re-listen to them. Season 3 was kinda boring & all over the place. Like a caricature of itself, you know? The new characters are flat & the story wasn’t as engaging. More than once I found myself thinking “when is this going to end?” Whereas the first two seasons, I didn’t WANT them to end. Oh well, all good things come to an end.
  • Smurfkisser17
    I was SO in.
I loved it, I was completely enthralled and so thrilled to find it. Maybe if I had done Patreon, the first 2 seasons wouldn't have been so messy and disorganized. Season 3 made some folks mad and I'm now one of them. They missed the mark with all the JT crud. Walker women forever! Seems like they'd be and endless well, no need for this added trash. 💔💔
  • Spearthelizard
    Love the story
Great storyline. Would be better if new episodes were uploaded regularly or if we were updated as to when they will be uploaded.

I adore this podcast. Cam and Steve thrill and chill with their spellbinding stories. I recommend this podcast to everyone.

    Best podcast ever
This is by far my most favorite podcast! The storytelling makes you feel like you’re in the store witnessing it yourself. I’ve gone back and listened to all the seasons a few times while I wait on the new seasons to come out.
  • Wolfbone
    Talented
This show / wow so fn good . I love the story being told. My only complaint is they don’t get them out fast enough lol . Really i recommend these podcasts, total entertainment!!!!! If I had money I’d put this in either a cartoon series or tv series , but I don’t , I know what’s good though and this here is Good. Anyway I’ve become a huge fan and can’t wait to hear more family.the voice guy is also awesome. Can’t say enough good things about this show. Agin put more out faster lol. Love y’all. James Blackburn.
