It was great to hear from Boulala, and I’m sure the interviewers meant well, but I found the insistent and almost obsessive preoccupation with Ali’s history of drug and alcohol use very bizarre and misguided. Interviewers set the tone of the conversation, and the one set here pathologizes Ali from beginning to end. He appears as little more than a drug addict. But what about his childhood? His beginnings as a skateboarder? The whereabouts and role of his parents while he’s in the US at such a young age? Who he idolized as a young skater and how that impacted that approach to it? His unique and artistic flair? These are infinitely more interesting questions. Please think through an interview before giving one, especially when the opportunity to talk to these guys is so scarce.
