First time I listened I was ho-hum. 2nd time it just snuck up on me and now is one of my favorites. The more I listen, the more I love it!!

I really love how Suzannah respects and listens to her special guest on the different subjects that she presents. There’s no judgment only appreciation for what that particular subject matter expert brings to the table. I’m not a history genius, I just love listening to it and she makes it worth listening to!

Suzannah is amazing and this podcast is fascinating and entertaining. I always learn something new!

I don't know why it should be a surprise at this point--Suzannah has been a first rate tv presenter for years now, but she absolutely excels in this format as well. The episodes shed light on an impressively diverse range of well-conceived themes, and the host's rapport with her guests is uniquely kind and compelling. Best show I've heard in a while...

This is a wonderful podcast. I have learned so much.

So many, very interesting topics but often the guests spend the majority of the time talk about themselves, or their process, or their style of writing, or how the research was done as opposed to the actual subject. Just listen to the female pirate episode and I’m almost all the way through knowing nothing about the actual Pirates but so much about the author and her process I think this is a great podcast if anyone wants to learn about the authors and historians and how they go about their work, but it’s rare that the full-time is spent on the subject him or herself I often end the episode, short in frustration

The guests are interesting, expert, and well worth listening to, The host is fine but the entire production is undermined by the distraction of the background music. The volume is greater at intervals but generally It is just loud enough to sound like some kind of interference behind the voice of the speaker. What is the point? It does not add to The podcast it’s simply an annoyance. I finally decided to give up listening.

Great podcast. The history is well presented and the guests mostly keep their personal political leanings out of the conversation. Very rare in podcasting these days. Much appreciated. Well done.

I love this show, and I was very interested in what the guest was saying on the forbidden desire episode, but there was a very high-pitched sound that made it impossible (for me, anyway) to listen to. I don't know if it was a whistling coming from his microphone or from his voice or from some kind of feedback during the editing process, but it was painful/annoying. I don't know that you can do much about it and obviously I'm not going to ding any stars, but I did want to make you aware. The sound quality on his end was also not great so if I turned up the volume to hear him, the whistling got proportionally worse.

I never miss an episode of Not Just the Tudors because I hear cutting-edge research not available to the general population. The guests are so experienced in their field, yet they are willing to talk about their work in a way that the interested general listener can understand.

I’ve tried to listen to this podcast for about a year. Some topics are interesting. Rarely a guest speaker is tolerable in their conceit! None of the “jokes” are even almost funny. I’ve wanted so many episodes to be good and they could have been, but the guest speakers are just so obnoxious in their ideas of their own intelligence. Sorry you spent so much of your education studying royal a-holes and you have no ability to make some of the information you’ve learned sound remotely interesting. Good job to whomever titles the episodes. You’ve managed to keep me clicking and attempting to listen for a long time. But I give up.

I love to listen to Not Just The Tudors. The episode Murder in the Stuart Court was amazing! The telling of Thomas Overbury’s story by Alastair Bellany was masterful. I’ve actually listened to the episode multiple times because it’s so enrapturing. It’s a complex and interconnected story that Professor Bellany tells so eloquently it’s easy to follow along and understand every detail! Please have him on again to tell another fascinating piece of Stuart history!

The only problem with listening to this podcast is that I just assume that everyone I speak to is also a regular listener and wants to talk about Tudor England. How could they not be?

...too many fiction writers, too much fan-womaning(?) for historical figures... The English have issues yall. Funny how they obsess over Norman conquest and Henry VIII, but crickets about 100s of years of Empire, the pinnacle of their power and wealth. huh. weird. 😒

I love the podcast and the topics, but the latest episode is one I had to skip (again) since the guest’s voice is so scratchy and very hard to listen to. Suzanne has such a lovely voice. Too bad.

Because of this podcast I became a paid subscriber. I love the conversational aspect of 99.9% of the content. Some of the guests have so much information to convey they end up talking quite at length without interjection by Dr Lipscomb. That can be a challenge to listen to, but it is such a minor critique that it is not worth removing a star. The combination of contemporary lenses to view history is a great addition to the world of just telling the past. I appreciate the opportunity to hear challenges to previously perceived truths of history, from multiple academics who have been able to dig a bit deeper than a layperson. Finally, the expansion of the Tudor era world to show French, Spanish, Turkish, Moroccan, Persian and other cultures is greatly appreciated. Keep it up!

Not Just the Tudors is in my top three favorites podcasts. The gorgeous voiced Suzannah Lipscomb dives deep into the history of the age, and we are reminded that historical figures are humans with familiar motivations that the modern listener can understand. Since I’m new, I’ve jumped around listening to at least 30 episodes and was particularly moved by the Hilary Mantel tribute (I still can’t believe she’s gone). I love learning new things like the significance of Arthur Tudor’s name, that Thomas Boleyn wasn’t a pimp, the importance of Eustace Chapuys’ observations to our understanding on this period etc. Substantial, entertaining, educational fun! So glad I found her!

I’ve been a longtime listener to this podcast and subscribed to history hits to get the subscriber edition of Not Just the Tudors. But while I’ll keep listening to NJtT, I was sorry to have Mr. Lewis join to share his “Rick-kardian” conspiracy theories. I can avoid podcasts where he’s pursuing his pet project, but I’m not paying for the privilege.

The most recent episode with the cross over with Matt Lewis about the princes in the tower was great! Both guests made great points and kept the conversation engaging! Prof. Lipscomb is always great at what she does. Her and her guests are awesome. I read a review they use racial slurs, I think that’s very false, they are very informative and respectful. Love this pod!!!

First heard of Dr. Lipscomb on a British series from Britbox(?) which was great so I was very happy to find her podcast. Each episode is a must for Brit history fans.

Dr Lipscomb finds scholars who discuss their topics with the same insight, intelligence, and empathy that she has always shown in her documentaries. She's a great interviewer, coming to each conversation well-prepared so it can *be* a conversation, asking careful questions to provide context for the audience while inviting her guests to go into more depth. She doesn't shy away from the ugliness of the past (or present) either. But Dr. Lipscomb's respect for her guests, listeners, and human beings— not to mention her wonderful voice — make it easier to ponder distressing and infuriating topics.

An excellent podcast and I find myself listening despite the fact that I'm sick of the Tudors.

Show is amazing, but the audio levels are all over the map. Commercials are extremely loud and the host is often louder than the guest.

An excellent podcast except for its repeated use of the racist phrase “Chinese whispers”.

I really enjoyed the one with Craig Shreve. So interesting I can’t wait to get the book. This would be a great movie as well.

Fascinating. For those of us who don’t fear history. Soon to banned in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Arizona, and West Virginia. Especially, if you know who, gets you know what. History repeats when a society doesn’t learn the lessons of the past.

Your reformation podcast was great. Along the same lines - I would like to hear about the political environment in Germany that made Luther’s revolt possible without him being martyred. This crucial dynamic gave fertile ground for Protestant communities to take root and expand.

This podcast was great, Suzannah is my favorite historian ever and she’s so eloquent and beautiful and carefree. But she’s become so openly political. Heavily leftist and very outspoken on twitter and online about her personal beliefs. It’s unfortunately spilling into her gorgeous podcast, where she’s starting to really ruin a good thing. You hear time and time again in history you can’t and shouldn’t use historical events & judge then by modern day lenses/culture & standards & she’s really forgetting that. Instead what is starting to bleed into her podcast are her personal leftist (I’m leftist too, but the left can be very aggressive and cultish politically and they throw their beliefs in your face sometimes) and you sort of get this ultra feminist vibe of angry and wokeness at the bad white man patriarchy, as she applies her personal ideologies to history from a 2023 cultural and especially political standpoint. She’s also doing a lot of activism with LGBTQIA2S stuff (and I am in this group of people as well btw) and and I find it ruins just being swept to history. She’s a great historian but she wants you to believe her truth and what she believes.

Fantastic podcast for English history fans. It’s great to here they discussion from the hostess and other hosts; I will say the panel discussing Thomas More was exceptionally biased. Clearly the guests, particularly the one heavily criticizing Wolf Hall, never actually read Wold Hall. It was great to see all the panelists actively excuse More’s treatment of those he deemed heretics. Did they hear themselves excusing the torture and execution of people by their beloved More?

This is a fantastic podcast! I just stumbled on it a couple days ago and I’ve already listen to probably 10 episodes. And as a sidenote, Suzanne, the host should hook up with the app Calm, because her voice is so lovely and soothing.

Wow! What an amazing podcast! I grew up reading 16th century European history. This podcast is a dream come true. I have learned SO much from the podcast.

Dr. Lipscomb’s deep knowledge informs incisive and thoughtful questions. Her guests are very well chosen, inside and outside her wheelhouse. All make for edifying and entertaining listening.

This is my favorite 16th century podcast, hands down. Dr Lipscomb is not only an expert herself, but a profoundly gifted interviewer. So often you hear a podcast host try to redirect focus to their own interest- not so on NJTT. Lipscomb has a knack for asking the right questions to help the interviewee shine and the audience is all the richer for it. If you want to dive deep into a fascinating and tumultuous century, Not Just the Tudors is absolutely for you.

I love this podcast because it’s not only fascinating, but brings new perspectives and fresh insight to the Tudor era. The guests are always so knowledgeable and the host interacts with them congenially and naturally.
